I just spoke to Pat Harrington.

I can personally confirm that he IS alive and well.

So we can start the rumor that Haley Mills is dead.

Haley Mills is dead?!?

I could have sworn I read her obituary years ago...

Actually, I'm going to take back the Mike Birbiglia DVD because DeepDiscount had it for almost $5 less!  So, I ordered it from there. :)

But now you have to wait for the DVD!  Don't you want it NOW!!!!!!!?????!!!!?????

;D

Normally, I would...REALLY, I would, but I watched it on Comedy Central, so I've seen it.  Just not in its unedited version, so I can wait. :)

I don't think I've ever bought a DVD at a Border's.

Good. They charge an arm and a leg.

Isn't Amazon much cheaper?

Usually, but there is that "I WANT IT NOW" thing. ;)

Oh, and I'm up.

And please stay that way!

BK, you haven't sharply cut your carbs in the past few days, have you?  It sounds like your blood sugar might have plummeted.

With all the mention of the Encores APPLAUSE on ten-best and ten-worst lists, working in some of the names of people who are still alive:

I'm  getting narrow but also much wider
Part Ann Romano and part Mr. Schneider
But alive
But alive
But alive

I'm like George Bush when they asked him what POZ meant
Part Hayley Mills and part Haley Joel Osment
But alive
But alive

BK, I'm sorry to hear about your fall today. My dad about 10 years ago had a similar problem and his fall resulted in a huge gash next to his his eye socket. I'm still grateful he wasn't blinded. I hope you're feeling better now.

I forgot today was the deadline for estimated NY State income taxes so i made out my check and ran to the post office with it. They closed at noon; i arrived at 12:20.

Luckily, a postman told me he could take it and get it postmarked today. So I trusted him. I know this will come back and bite my ass.

This all sounds suspiciously like the plot of the Muppet's Christmas special two weeks ago.

Question for BK:

What kind of wall calanders have you for 2009?

I have a lovely calendar that was sent to me from Australia!  I also have a Futurama calendar and one that has theater posters from the Library of Congress. :)

DR George, I laso have an Aussie birdy calander and the theatre poster one.  I also have the calander that specializes in Rodgers and Hammerstein shows.  I still need one more for my home office.  I should have checked what MOMA had...

I just read this article at Playbill.com:
"Flower Drum Song" Among Films Selected for the National Film Registry

Quote
The complete list of 2008 selections follows:
"The Asphalt Jungle" (1950)
"Deliverance" (1972)
"Disneyland Dream" (1956)
"A Face in the Crowd" (1957)
"Flower Drum Song" (1961)
"Foolish Wives" (1922)
"Free Radicals" (1979)
"Hallelujah" (1929)
"In Cold Blood" (1967)
"The Invisible Man" (1933)
"Johnny Guitar" (1954)
"The Killers" (1946)
"The March" (1964)
"No Lies" (1973)
"On the Bowery" (1957)
"One Week" (1920)
"The Pawnbroker" (1965)
"The Perils of Pauline" (1914)
"Sergeant York" (1941)
"The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" (1958)
"So's Your Old Man (1926)
"George Stevens WW2 Footage (1943-46)
"The Terminator (1984)
"Water and Power (1989)
"White Fawn's Devotion" (1910)

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the National Film Registry that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant, to be preserved for all time. These films are not selected as the "best" American films of all time, but rather as "works of enduring significance to American culture."

I certainly wouldn't put undue pressure on the knee by doing a long jog. Giving in to a little ache is one thing, but I'd play it safe and put average weight on it today until you're sure it's OK.

But that's the way I am: always take precautions when the body has a weakness.

No idea.

It's been windy here today, so that's made the beautiful, sunny, cloudless skies and the environs seem colder than it actually is. Still, it's so nice for December!

I began my viewing today with last night's LEVERAGE. It was an outstanding episode, filled with surprises and wonderful sequences. The personalities of the team are really getting established and are something to look forward to every week. I much preferred this episode to the two previous ones, so I'm encouraged about upcoming stories.

I had to run some more errands at noon and while I was out we had a snow squall move through.  It was temporarily like a blizzard but once it passed there was zilch evidence of any snow.  Now we just have high winds and cold temps.  I'm leaning towards staying in tonight.

Back from the veterinarian whose diagnosis is going to cost me a huge chunk of money.  :(

But what did he say about DD Bosco?

He has a tumor on his leg that needs to be removed. And evidently such things cost and arm and a leg (hopefully not Bosco's).

I spent most of the afternoon on EL NORTE on Blu-ray. Haunting, sad, memorable. I loved it. Both lead actors were so easy to love and root for.

The Blu-ray was mostly terrific, and I was surprised at how dynamic the mono sound was. Naturally Criterion used linear PCM at 1.5 Mbps, so of course it was far superior to a typical mono DVD track at 192 kbps.

I also listened to a good chunk of Nava's commentary for the movie. Though he describes what we're watching, he does then go into some detail about his ideas, motivations, intentions, etc. A very entertaining commentary, and his speaking voice is very pleasant to listen to.

I pulled up the run time for the first bonus featurette, a documentary on the making of the movie: 58 minutes, so I'll be finishing the bonus features tonight. There are two additional features and the trailer to get to.

Since it's New Year's Eve and we just changed our colander:

I love, i love, I love my colander girl
Yeah, sweet colander girl

Fusilli
I'm so silly in love

Angel hair
She's from heaven above

Cavatelli
Yes, i covet that dame

Al dente
And it's her who's to blame

Yeah, yeah
Spaghetti to twirl
I love, i love, I love, I love
My colander girl
Every time, every time
That i eat

Elbow
Let me be her beau

Bow tie
I don't wanna go slow

Buckwheat
Yeah, we're buckin' a trend

Corkscrew
No, our love has no end

Yeah, yeah,
The pot starts to berl
I love I love I love I love
That colander girl
Every time, every time
That we eat

I had to schlep down to Leroy Street to pick up the UPS cartons and it's cold down there by the river, let me tell ya! While I was waiting for the packages to be found, I noticed several empty cabs driving by. When I left with the packages, there were no cabs in sight, so I waited a bit holding two heavy packages until a cab with his "not in service " light on drove by and stopped. This happens when the driver thinks he can make another fare while heading to this final destination with the cab. The driver, an African man, asked me where I was heading and I told him. He paused a second, and I thought, he's going the other direction; I'll keep waiting. Well, I was wrong. He kindly drove me to my door before he went off duty. The bill was $12.50 and I gave him $25.00. He deserved it.

WOW!  $12.50 from Leroy Street to the UWS!  He most definitely deserved that tip!

And due to the frigid cold temps and the high(!) winds(!!!), my brief walk outside was indeed brief.  Baby! It's COLD outside - and windy too!  -I literally almost got blown down by a gust of wind - along with about 15 other people who were standing around me on the sidewalk.  YEOW!
