It was very cold when I was out, but got my errands done and got back to a warm house.

It's one of the most gorgeous days EVER here in Oakland CA.  The sun caresses you and there are lovely breezes.

I despair, however, for what summer will be like if THIS is winter.

Aha - Lime Jello with pineapple.

It's grape jello that gets the grapefruit sections.

My mom used to do this but she also mixed it with cream and put chopped up pecans in it. Had that for dessert on many occasions.

I really can't complain too much. We've had very mild winters for the last four years with not even freezing temperatures, and spring flowers started blooming in February. So, it was time for us to have some weather like this.

Don't forget the vegetable flavored Jell-O that you put carrots and celery in  (and whatever else the Jell-O company could think of).

Besides, would we have cafeterias today if there was no Jell-O (well, and Swedish meatballs.... but not together)?

I watched Wednesday night's CSI: NY as I cooked and ate lunch. Good episode even though the two cases once again coincidentally ended up being tied together. And Sheldon Hawkes getting on Mac's bad side was something different, too.

Would she also do the layered salad/mold with Strawberry or Cherry Jell-O?  That was always one of my Mom's party staples.

I watched the last four episodes I had remaining in the MY THREE SONS set. The last one turned out to be the best one. Tim Considine took a summer job in a forest ranger tower. Just he and this hunky but uncommunicative ranger (friend of his dad's) for the summer. Tim tried to turn basically a drudge job into something exciting thus giving him a great showcase for lots of emotions and activity.

In another MY THREE SONS episode, Arthur Hunnicutt guest starred as a man operating a pony ride. He, Beau Bridges, and Cheryl Holdridge were about the only name guest stars I noticed in these 18 episodes.

Next, I watched the first part of the two part Season 3 finale for NCIS. Gibbs is injured in an explosion so Tony has to take over the team. A very emotional episode. I'll watch part two when I go back down, and that will end Season 3 of the show.

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing, and no Luke/Noah in the previews for next week either. Maybe the two actors are on vacation until the new mystery storyline starts up.

I ended my afternoon watching last night's 30 ROCK. Only an OK episode. Some funny stuff with Salma Hyack's patient tattling on Jack, but otherwise not a great episode.

All of this reminded me of something someone told me once -- something about putting pineapple into Jell-O when using fruit cocktail...or possibly of not using any fruit cocktail...I just don't remember exactly.  So, googled and found this:

"Jello consists of gelatin (a protein), sugar, and flavoring. Gelatin protein is insoluble. Amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are soluble. The Jello made with canned pineapple gels and that which is made with fresh pineapple doesn't. The bromelain enzyme in the fresh pineapple degrades the gelatin protein; digests it into a bowl of amino acids--still nutritious!! During the canning process, pineapple is heated to a temperature high enough to denature the bromelain enzyme (a protein itself) making it functionless. Thus, the gelatin protein molecules remain intact and insoluble. "

Has anyone ever had trouble with Jell-O not "setting" after mixing in pineapple?  And if so, was it canned pineapple or fresh?

I had a great aunt who was saying that to the pastor before a church potluck.  Guess what?  The Jell-O didn't set right.  My great aunt was known for her cooking and the pastor kidded about her to no end that she couldn't make Jell-O right.

There used to be some special way to make Jell=O with pineapple, but I don't remember what it was.

OHH!!!!

So....

Jell-O was usually the dessert of choice when my Mom would prepare our school lunches when my brothers and I were in elementary school.  She would prepare individual cups for each of us, and she was always buying new Tupperware containers because my brothers and I had a tendency to lose them or accidentally throw them in the trash at school.  -This was long before Jell-O started making their own individual, portable and disposable cups.  So...

It was "Clean Up The Classroom Day" at Gales Ferry Elementary.  My fourth grade teacher, Mr. Sharack, assigned groups of students a different area of the classroom to clean, and towards the end of the day, we all cleaned out the "cubby holes" and coat closet.  There were cubby holes for each of us along the floor, and there were also some "overflow" cubby holes above the coat racks.  Since Mr. Sharack was the tallest one in the classroom, he "volunteered" to clean out the the overflow spaces...

"What's in this paper bag?... Is this your plastic container?"
-Yes.
"And this one too?"
-Yes.
"Oh.. what is this back here?..."
-Oh, that must be mine too...

By the time he was done, I believe I had re-collected at least 15 containers.  And not all of them had contained Jell-O.  Some had contained peaches, canned figs, fruit cocktail... And there were some (metal) spoons too.  Thankfully, I was just able to take all of them home, and not open them all of them there as part of our science class.

Slow morning.  I decided to make the difficult decision I had to make - which is, I'm afraid, to cancel the upcoming Kritzerland limited edition of Lady Oscar.  We hit a last-minute legal snag and while I'm basically in the right, I don't want to deal with bullies - it's simply not worth it.  I don't make enough money on these for it to be worth any hassles at all.  So, we're moving on to the release that was slated to follow that, and I'm hoping we can have it ready to announce in about two weeks.  I've got everyone working overtime on it.

Sorry.

Ah, yes.  That was Jell-O's attempt to become the new "aspic".

Given what we know of your eating habits, I seriously doubt there'd have been much food bits left for "show-and-tell" in science class.

Circuit City RIP!

And since Circuit City is based here in Richmond, VA, there have been "breaking news" reports all afternoon on the radio and TV.

*And knowing how Circuit City treated - well, fired - a good chunk of their employees during their first(!) re-structuring and bankruptcy filing about 10 years ago, well... Buh-bye!
