It's still gray out, but I'm holding out hope it will clear up in an hour or two - I wouldn't be ready to jog before then anyway.  Meanwhile, perhaps I'll start writing in about thirty minutes.  Priority package rates went up today.

I had a number of most peculiar dreams last night, including one featuring our very own BK.  BK and I, along with several other "extras," were sharing a house and I found out that BK had been tangling with my "Wikipedia nemesis" on several articles he had a personal interest in.  Strange.

I ordered the Spinetti bio, DR ELMORE....  But you know, and this is not on the book jacket as far as I know, I am getting a bit weary of people saying the were "the fifth Beatle"......

There were only four when they hit it big.  Everyone else was a hanger-on.  If anyone could have the title it would be Epstein....or out of the group Mr Murray the K.

I often think of myself as the 2,176,835th Beatle.

*A friend of mine spent last week back in Atlanta visiting his family.  He had some "suggestions" for me: Inman Perk, West Egg, and Fat Matt's BBQ.  -Any thoughts?

I almost took you to West Egg for brunch before you left, (it's the place that has the Coca Cola cupcakes) but it is usually so crowded you have to wait for at least a half-hour. It is good, but my favorite breakfast place is this:  http://www.suninmybelly.com/simbcafe.html

We went there just yesterday. I took my little French boy there recently, too. Soooo goooood.

Fat Matt's is very close to our house and is our favorite quick BBQ. They don't have a huge selection but what they do have is great, and the music is usually good. They used to have a place next door for fried chicken and catfish which we loved, because it had great collards and other veggies, but they have been closed for months with no clue as to when/if they will ever re-open.

Haven't been to Inman Perk, but there is a coffee shop we like, also near the West Egg area, called Octane. We may watch the ceremony there tomorrow.

Speaking of Washington D.C.: Jose, did you ever hear this story?

A Violinist in the Metro

A man sat at a metro station in  Washington , DC  and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few second s and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly, he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tugged him along, hurriedly, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there an y recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in  Boston , and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

I saw the video of this-WOW!  I'm sure many of those that rushed along wished they had the time to stop.

I saw that THE MENTALIST started 20+ minutes late, so I set the DVR to record the next two programs after the scheduled end of THE MENTALIST just to make sure I got the entire episode.

The opening of THE MENTALIST didn't look right & the background sound was there but we couldn't hear them speaking.  The sound improved with only one slight lapse.   Eventually we figured out we only had the last half of the show.

How did we end up with the second half when it began 20 minutes late?  Not that I'm complaining.  I would rather miss the first half than the second.

Thank you so much, DR Elmore! The last time we had this topic, you directed me to the PORGY AND BESS soundtrack, and now HELLO, DOLLY! You are the greatest!

I think the Mary Martin version is my very favorite HELLO, DOLLY!  I do love the Pearl Bailey version, because that is the cast I saw on Broadway; but I think I still prefer the London cast.

That was the plan. However, since I "forgot" that the train and bus schedules and routes could possibly be adjusted due to the Inauguration traffic, well...  -Usually, I just buy the return ticket once I'm down here, which is what I intended to do this time.  However, it looks like the bus lines and Amtrak focused on getting everyone into to DC over the past few days, and many of my regular outbound routes were either re-routed or cancelled.

As for those "ants" - They were just enjoying the concert with everyone else.
