David just sent me his notes based on our reading. Ninety percent of the dialogue suggestions are right on the money and the others we'll have to discuss, since they involve lines that are pretty well loved by fans of the film - that's been my struggle with this all along - keeping the stuff I know people like - but that doesn't always mean that it's right for THIS incarnation of it, so I'm totally keeping an open mind. He also had some suggestions for me about some of the songs, including the little prologue number, which I think he's mistakenly thinking of as an opening number, which it really isn't - it's just a scene setter like the Opening Night section of The Producers prior to The King Of Broadway. I wrote it because I felt it wasn't musical enough to start with a six-page scene before we had singing. But maybe I'm wrong and maybe we'll cut it - he just thought it should function more as an opening number, but that's not its intention - it's only a minute long - it does have two big laughs in it, both of which landed at the reading. He had a good suggestion for Rosie's ballad, which I'll try and if I like it, I'll have Lauren come back and redo the last verse for the demo. And he thought the little number that precedes the audition sequence (where we meet the people who are going to the audition) was too repetitive, and boy is he right about that - I really didn't like it at all - I like the first part of it, and then I'm probably going to rewrite the rest.
