Bandit is napping after our morning walk. I, of course, have laundry to do.

Good morning!

It's cold and gray and rainy again this morning and promises to be that way all day. The whole weekend is especially dreary.

I've decided to take the day off. I have a DVR full of shows, a dreary day outside which means I'll be inside for all of it, and so I'd like to get some of those shows watched and erased. Tonight I plan to watch DVDs and Blu-rays and just enjoy the day, the first day I've been able to do that in weeks.

I have three Criterion discs waiting to be reviewed, but two of them don't come out until March 31st, so I have the time. And unlike the last couple of weeks, I'm not expecting any major Disney release on Blu-ray this week either, so the week should be relatively easy.

TOD:

I can't say it was a life changing book since I had already decided I wanted to go into teaching, but UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE certainly confirmed in my mind that's what I wanted to do with my life.

And it was my life for thirty years.

BK-

I went to Carnegie Tech(Carnegie Mellon) with Joyce Womack who married Michael Ebert and became Joyce Ebert. She later married Arvin Brown.
She was a wonderful caring person and splendid actress(and she could sing also) and spent most of her summers at The Williamstown Playhouse.
She died too soon at age 64.

I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS

I also used to read lots of Krishnamurti, the Indian philosopher. No one title--his writings in general.

Ah, great minds, Larry and I had the same thought reading BK's wonderful notes today:  Time for the autobiography.  I too have the DVD of Forget-Me-Not Lane and it's wonderful!  And BK's wonderful in it!

Life-changing books?  Probably far-too many that I would say were influential in my life and career.

THE RETURN OF TARZAN...the first Tarzan book I ever read and the book that probably started my book-collecting mania.  There are now over five thousand books in the collection.

SHE...by H. Rider Haggard.  My favourite book of all time.  I have over thirty variant editions including two firsts.  Haggard stirs deep waters and spills his sub-conscious all over the page.

GOODNIGHT, SWEET PRINCE...Gene Fowler's bio of John Barrymore

CYRANO DE BERGERAC

RICHARD III...Paul Murray Kendall's bio of the much-maligned king.

A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN THEATRE...probably stoked my imagination more about the theatre than anything.

THE GREEN MAN...by Henry Treece...dark, bleak interpetation of the Amleth or Hamlet myth with unique characterizations of Arthur and Beowulf.

Just a few...

She of the Evil Eye should be here in about forty minutes and I'll try to do the long jog right then.  I think my editing session is at ten-thirty, although I haven't had confirmation.

I forgot to mention all the weird presents and mail Bud Cort used to get at the stage door - from his rabid and strange fans of Harold and Maude.

BK,

Was that Ray Henderson of DySylva, Brown & Henderson?

I believe I had some direct dealings with him when I was putting together my JOLSON play.

[Remind me someday to tell you a story about that, and one of the little loopholes of copyright law.]

She of the Evil Eye is about to enter the home environment and I shall be jogging although it looks quite chilly and gray out - but jog I will.

Good Morning

Last night for dinner I had some tomato soup and a slice of rye bread with some cheddar cheese melted on top and a glass of gingerale

this morning for breakfast I had one poached egg, one small pork sausage, 5 button mushrooms, one slice of toasted rye bread with cream cheese and two glasses of milk

betterer and betterer!

Thank you all for the vibes!!

I can't think of any book that "changed my life," but there was a movie that definitely did.

FIELD OF DREAMS

I was seriously thinking about quitting "the business" at the time, but then I heard the Burt Lancaster character talk about putting your dreams aside to do something else, figuring you'll come back to them...but you never do.

I decided not to quit, and soon after that, I made my first screenplay sale.

I guess the 1980s was a rough time for everybody.

Good Afternoon!

And we're off and running!

After about an hour or so of paperwork and meeting and greeting, I started my first vocal rehearsal.  And about an hour later, I had gone through the first two numbers.  Almost.  I have a few harmony passages to teach after the lunch break, and then we put the numbers on their feet.

Again - So far, so good.

Pogue! Great minds indeed! I was going to include CYRANO, and I thought, naw, it's a play.
The Daniel Blum PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN THEATRE was like my Spegel Christmas catalog, the biggest wish-for book ever!

I should also add to my list Martin Gottfried's A THEATRE DIVIDED, which is one of my favorite books about left-and right-wing American theatre. Gottfried was a really peculiar man and I admired his books and criticism so much I made an effort to like the egocentric sonofabitch as well. Didn't work.

And as for lunch: two stalks of celery, a banana, a granny smith apple, and a small container of yogurt.*  Not a Morning Bun or Chocolatine in sight.  ;)

Also Gervaise Hughes' wonderful book, THE MUSIC OF SIR ARTHUR SULLIVAN, a wonderful examination of the music, orchestration, musical influences, etc. and Francis Collinson's great tome of the early 1940s, ORCHESTRATION FOR THE THEATRE.
