I forgot to mention yesterday that RENO 911! began its new season last night. I missed it myself, but I'll try to find another broadcast on Comedy Central over the next few days. I'm sure it'll be repeated a lot.

Today I'll be working on Criterion's Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé. Naturally I've never seen any of these science-oriented films, but they must be something special for Criterion to lavish a three-disc set on them (The third disc is a two-plus hour documentary on the filmmaker).

I doubt I'll be able to get the entire set done today as each film disc has three hours of material on it. So, this looks like a two day job. No sweat. It doesn't come out until April 21st.

We are having a Sedar tonight. My mom made a brisket. And matzah ball soup. And potato latkes.

What will be interesting is when i was little my grandmother used to do something to her gelfite fish. I don't even really know what she did. But somehow she fried it so it was dark brown. IT was my most favorite thing.

This year my aunt (her daughter) is going to make it for tonight. Hopefully it will be as good as i remember.

Another my grandmother used to make which i have not had in years (and which i loved so much). was grebinas (i really have no idea how to spell this). You somehow fry chicken fat and onions and
even though it sound weird it is the most delicious treat ever.

I just found this:

Gribenes (cracklings) are bits of chicken skin that are fried crisp during the rendering process. These small, crunchy treats add intense flavor to breads and also make a delicious garnish for chopped chicken liver. (To add them to yeast breads, knead some crisp gribenes into the dough after the first full rise.)

DR Jane re: your comment about the AMERICAN IDOL video being taken down on youtube.

Not that you'd want to see it again but it is up at the american idol site. So people can watch it. They just took them down at youtube.

Illya, in all her shrink wrapped yellow glory has found her way across the Atlantic to my desk.

I shall play it at home this evening.

The Summer Of 1952. I just graduated from High School and was on my way to Carnegie Tech(now Carnegie Mellon)to Major in Drama. That Summer I was accepted to Apprentice at The Cape Playhouse in Dennis Massachssetts.Cape Playhouse was owned by Richard Aldrich(Gertrude Lawrence's Husband)
The First Production that Summer was LADY IN THE DARK starring Kitty Carlisle.
After Opening Night,The Apprentice's had their own little Party. The weather was extemely hot. In the 90's. We served Sea Breeze which was(at that time) GIN and GRAPEFRUIT JUICE, I never had Gin before and was extremely thirsty. I downed three or four cups of that mixture and felt no pain. My whole body was Anesthetized-from my head to my feet. You could have Operated on me and I would't have felt a thing. I have never felt that way again mainly because I never drank Gin after that incident, My Drink of Choice now is Grey Goose Vodka.
By The way,Gertrude Lawrence was with us the entire Summer. She was Dying from Cancer and had just taken a leave of absence from appearing in THE KING AND I(I believe she died right after that summer). She spent a great deal of time with us youngsters. What a wonderful and gracious Lady. I will never forget that Wonderful Summer and the Wonderful Gertie.

I must do some computer maintenance and then print out my tax returns. I'm going to put them in the mail tomorrow. I'm angry that I can't e-file this year. Grrrr!

I am not sure I transcribe all the lyrics correctly

I Don't Have To Hide Anymore

Will I be boring?
Or will you be ignoring the face
A safe
Oh I wish there were some pat
That I can run up and say to you now
But I get stuck and I don’t know
How to say what I mean

You make me smile and laugh
That doesn’t sound like much
But it’s simple things
A look, a touch
And I feel so warm
And feel so right inside
You bring me out
So I don’t have to hide anymore
Anymore

The face, a safe?  No.

Will I be boring
Or will you be ignoring
The things I say
Oh, I wish there were something pat
That I could run up and say to you now
But I get stuck and I don't know how
To say what I mean

There's a second verse that was recorded but cut right out of the multitracks, so I've never been able to restore it, and then the repeated chorus.

I'd say things that I want to
Yes, I really should move on to
The point of this
Oh, I really am in a rut
But I'll try saying the things that I feel
It really isn't a great big deal
Believe me it's not
All right then...

You make me smile and laugh doesn't sound like much
But it's simple things - a look - a touch
And I feel so warm, I feel so right inside
You bring me out and I don't have to hide
Anymore... Anymore...

(repeat)

Imagine my surprise having written this song in late 1973 (around the time of Feast) to hear Barry Manilow's Can't Smile Without You - same exact vamp and and basically the same hook.  Because my song had been sent around quite a lot by my then manager, we thought about doing something, but ultimately didn't.  But I was first.  And I know a good hook when I come up with one :)

I did my fair share of drinking while in my 20s, and there were certainly a few times that I was drunk, which might have caused me to do some things I might not necessarily have done if sober  ::)   (Circa 1986, I do have a memory of inviting home, after a party, the latest Mr. Oregon Leather and then making him watch a double feature of ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS and ATTACK OF THE 50 FT WOMAN)  :D

I rarely drink now, maybe I will have a scotch on the rocks or a martini about once a year.

DR MB, I don't care what DR Elmore says about you--you make me smile.

DR MBARNUM - Mr Oregon Leather probably remembers that night, too.

Shocking video, DR DtM - but I had noticed several of those before - good old Disney.

TOD - New Year's Eve, sometime in the late 1970's.  I was at my parents' and we decided to stay in and have a quiet evening.  Sat around watching TV and drinking scotch & soda, then at midnight my mom brought out snacks and a bottle of cold duck.  That was when I learned never to mix liquor and wine  :P

Now, I do like wine with meals and an occasional scotch, or Margarita, or Bloody Mary, but I really don't drink much at all - too many empty calories.  Oh, once in a great while, I'll have beer with pizza, and I do like to have a Manhattan when I'm in Manhattan.  Our friend Doug makes a wicked cosmopolitan, too.

Production Meeting - CHECK!

*And during the course of the production meeting I happened to notice that some of the swastikas on the costumes were backwards.  Consequently, some of them on the set were backwards.  Yes, they can go "right" or "left", but there is a proper way when they are displayed "to the front".  If anything, they should all be consistent.

Breakfast - CHECK!

*I headed back to Hominy Grill again, mainly because it was near the shop.  I had their Strawberry Pancakes, Double-Cut Bacon and some OJ.  It was good, but I really do need to find another place for breakfast - or just eat here at the apartment like I normally do.  Their pricing is really starting to bug me: one(!) egg on the side is $2.25, and a side order of bacon - which is just two pieces, and not a proper 3-piece "rasher" of bacon - is $3.50.

Hair Cut - CHECK!

*I went to a place that was recommended by some of the staff at the theatre, a good old-fashioned barber shop.  I got a good cut, but I may try to do some "touch-up" work later on.

And what was the reaction to your Swastika suggestion, DR JOSE?

Car is at the shop....estimate to come.  Sounds like a fan motor.....which is what I thought after perusing the inner web....so we shall see.

Did you get your/a car back, DR JOSE?
