As for my favorite picnic foods:

Potato Salad - A good potato salad can be hard to come by, but when I come across a bowl of mayo-laced goodness... :)  I like mine with some chopped eggs and pickle relish.  Although, I recently had a sweet-potato-and-apple salad that was simply divoon.

Hot Dogs - Ballpark Franks!  And cookouts tend to be the only place I ever eat hot dogs.

I used to like hot dogs, but for two years, I took one or two to school for my lunch every day, and I kind of overdosed on them. Thus, I don't have much a taste for them any more.

Hamburgers are a completely different story. Yum!

That's a good idea. I think I've got a picture of my dad in his Army uniform. Let me look for it.

Now I guess it's time for me to head downstairs. There is no mail to check (DARN!), but I have some straightening up to do and then I'll start on lunch.

My Dad went to Okinawa at the very end of WWII and then was sent to a then-newly-troublesome spot that my Mom had never heard of - Korea.

I don't think so, DR JRand.  I do know that, at some point, he was part of an honor guard for former-president Hoover.

If any DR happens to be in the market for a new blender - "in the market", is that the correct phrase ??? in any case...

If any DR happens to be looking for a new blender, Sur La Table is currently running a Web Only special on a Kitchen Aid Blender.  Not a bad deal.  The catch: only one color available: Caviar Black.

Hey all, happy Memorial Day.  Been keeping up with bk's notes, quite a way to start the day usually.  This weekend is/was auditions for The Full Monty here in San Mateo.  One day of auditions, one day of callbacks and more callbacks this eve.  Yes, for the dance auditions they had to strip down to their underwear, and yes, it was uncomfortable at first, but in the end was a lot of fun.

Today will be house/yard work before more callbacks and grocery shopping.  Don't think we'll get to the movies, though.  I really want to see "Angels and Demons", maybe next weekend.

TOD - fried chicken and any salad mixed with mayo!

She was married to an Air Force Brigadier General when she passed away.

Well, it's hard to think of him without having the song from "Annie" come to mind...

I'm up after a good night's sleep (eight hours).  The day is overcast at the moment, but that will probably burn off in an hour or so and then I'll do the long jog and then I'll start my busy day of relaxing.

I would need to find a pic of my Dad, which maybe I will do.  In the meantime, you can read a sentence or two about him here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Douglas,_Utah

and here's a news article on the award my Dad received which was presented to him by his good friend Gen. Westmoreland:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=336&dat=19830216&id=n-UOAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ZoMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7337,360795

I got to meet "Bill" and "Kitzy" (no, I'm not kidding) that night and they gave me several lemons from Bob and Dolores Hope's tree.

My father is also a recurring character in the famed "Molly" stories of A.J. Liebling.  These originally ran in The New Yorker, but later were compiled in many books.

There's also a really good documentary on Ft. Douglas produced by KUED, SLC's PBS affiliate, which has been broadcast nationally a couple of times.  It's called The Spirit of Ft. Douglas and has a whole segment on my Dad.  I of course provided all the pics/info for that segment, but couldn't get to SLC in time to be interviewed.  I hope any of you passing through SLC will take an hour or two to visit Ft. Douglas, and especially to drop by the Museum my Dad founded, which is housed in a building named after him
