That's weird--the Kritzerland title banner is missing from the site.

Ah, well...

reasons to be pretty was the first post-Tony casualty, and now...

Guys & Dolls to Close June 14

This REALLY surprises me. I thought GUYS & DOLLS was doing very well! Not SRO but better than lots of shows still running.

I did turn my AC on, and it has been clicking on and off all afternoon. It's hot and rather stifling here.

I watched MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST while I ate lunch. Very funny and very ambitious start to the season. I mean, when you start off with Bette Midler, where can you go? All the Grammy stuff was funny.

Then I started on LOST - Season 1 on Blu-ray. Suffice to say it looks and sounds movie-like. Looking at this in high definition, you'd never, EVER suspect it was a television series. The visual and sound opulence is astounding.

It is very moving rewatching these episodes with characters like Shannon, Boone, Charlie, Michael all very importaant characters in season one and realizing what's to come for them.

This is one truly brilliant show, and it's EASY to see why the first season won the Emmy for Best Drama Series. There's really never been anything remotely like this on television.

I listened to parts of the commentaries with the two part pilot episode. J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Bryan Burk do the talking, and they have some funny stories to relate.

Unlike previous Blu-ray editions, though, this one lacks an insert card giving details on the episodes, which ones have commentaries, etc.

I got three full episodes watched and am about halfway through episode #4 - "Walkabout" which gave our first pertinent information on John Locke. It's an amazing episode.

I suspect I'll just stick with LOST all afternoon and evening. The only thing I have that's coming on tonight is RESCUE ME, and I'll record it and watch it tomorrow during lunch.

Hopefully I'll get at least half of the episodes done by this evening.

DR Matt H. - do you happen to know if the included commentary tracks are duplications of what was included in the previous DVD set releases?

only for "in-house" viewing.

Sort of like DR elmore3003's VCR.

Aren't Elmore's VCR offerings better described as "out-house" viewing?

Well... Their advance was "not so hot".  Apparently, a couple of other shows have "not-so-hot" advances, so...  -And I suspect that since Oliver Platt, Craig Bierko and Lauren Graham were only signed up for a six-month contract... Better to let them go now, instead of having to release them for television and movie obligations.  ???

I feel sure they are, but (I don't know if this happens on the DVD) sometimes during the commentary the show pauses and the disc branches into a behind-the-scenes featurette showing something special about a particular moment during filming (an effects shot that doesn't go right, etc.) Very impressive use of branching.

TOD - the only kitchen disaster I have really had was when I put dishwashing liquid into the dishwasher.....do not do that!

My dad once put dishwashing liquid in the washing machine. He then learned why laundry detergent always says "low suds" on the bottle.

My worst kitchen disaster was due to pure stupidity on my part. I had never had a nice cook top with a built-in griddle for making pancakes and things of that sort. I turned it on, oiled the griddle, spooned on some pancake batter, and began cooking. I did notice that it seemed that the griddle was taking a long time to get hot. My husband (at the time) emerged and completely flipped out when he saw that I deglected to remove the stainless steel cover first. The cover was warped/bent and badly stained, but once it cooled down, it snapped right back into it's original shape, I cleaned it with Ajax, and it was as good as new. I lucked out on that one.

I'm beginning to really understand that I have some real enemies or haters out there regarding my YouTube stuff.

I posted Skip's recording of the late great David Carroll singing TIME AND TIME AGAIN with Janie Smulyan on YouTube last night,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p28LS2ztGQo

and already someone's starting with the "one star" ratings to bring the rating down - and on Skip's song yet!

If you watch and listen and like it enough to be inclined to rate or comment, as always, it's very much appreciated!!!

Now that I am caught up, I can pick on BK.

From the notes:

Quote
...and then I got on the freeway only to find bumper to bumper traffic for the next three miles or so – two right lanes closed for freeway work – work that was not in evidence – the only thing in evidence was two closed lanes and a lot of unnecessary traffic, thanks to the usual inept planning of the city. Go city. Not.

BK: your aim is off. The "city" has no control over Freeway closures - they are the province of CALTRANS, a state organization. When freeway work is scheduled over a period of time, it is more cost effective to close  the affected lanes for the duration than to try and open and close them to adjust to schedule gaps.

Warning - panic ahead:

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Quote
WHO MAY DECLARE FIRST PANDEMIC IN 41 YEARS

GENEVA —  The World Health Organization said Tuesday a spike in swine flu cases in Australia may push it to finally announce the first flu pandemic in 41 years.
…
WHO's flu chief Keiji Fukuda said the agency wanted to avoid "adverse effects" if it announces a global outbreak of swine flu. Fukuda said people might panic or that governments might take inappropriate actions if WHO declares a pandemic.

Some flu experts think the world already is in a pandemic and that WHO has caved in to country requests that a declaration be postponed.
"On the surface of it, I think we are in phase 6," or a pandemic, said Margaret Chan, WHO's director-general.
…
If the swine flu virus were to be shown to be spreading rapidly from person to person in another world region beyond North America, such as Australia or Europe, that should trigger the conditions for WHO to declare a pandemic, meaning the outbreak has gone global.
…

In today's world of international air travel, every new airborne pathogen whose contagious  period includes a non-symptomatic phase will result in a pandemic - get used to it!

And all I can think how awful those producers were of Grand Hotel putting off recording the cast album until Mr. Carroll on was literally on death's door step. They brought him in to record his parts with a piano and collapsed before he was able to record anything.

Also how painful it must have been to have been at the Tony awards and watch the cast perform with Brent Barrett playing your part

Michael S - Yeah, i disabled the ratings after it got back up to over 4 stars.

I'm not sure what kind of perverse pleasure anonymous people get on youtube and imdb and such out of giving 1's to make their power over others felt, but it works.  (Even with ratings disabled, the rating sort-of matters since the rating before it was disabled still shows up on google and on my general menu anyway.)
