Well I'm off to a 50th birthday party.  It's an outside thing with a bon fire, so I'm glad it will be cool out.  I don't know the birthday boy that well, so we'll see...I may be there an hour and I may be ther for hours.    Only the shadow knows.

It starts here on monday. Can someone in the know describe exactly what this is. Is it a continuation from last season? Same cast?  Or can it be watched on its own?

It certainly may be watched on its own, and I am living proof, having not seen an episode of TORCHWOOD prior to "Children of Earth."  I didn't know until this week's Entertainment Weekly arrived today that it has not been shown in the US yet. . .
"Children" was recommended to me by a Facebook Friend and I was indeed hooked.
Gwen, Captain Jack Harkness, Ianto and Rhys are all present in this short (five episode) season, but since I've still to get to Season Two I can't really say if it picks up where that season left off. . .all I know is that "Children of Earth" should not be missed by sci-fi or good television fans.

"Children of Earth" is scheduled to be on BBC American all next week!  I've set my DVR to record the whole thing. ;D

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

HEALING AND RECOVERY VIBES FOR DR GINNY'S DBIL BILL!

Thanks, DR Jane.  My BiL who had the surgery is named John, but the vibes are most appreciated!

Latest is that he's off the ventilator.

Great news!

LOL-I believe I converted BIL to Bill.

And what if we weren't enamored with TORCHWOOD?

Though it was expected I'm sorry to hear about Walter Cronkite, the man was around forever.  What a wonderful long, productive life he had.

Yesterday I read Frank McCort, of ANGELA'S ASHES is gravely ill with meningitis and is not expected to survive.

Well, I came to "Children of Earth" with no preconceptions and found it to be remarkable.
When I started watching the first season, I found TORCHWOOD to be an iffy proposition.  There are some really fine episodes, but, for the most part the thirteen episodes seemed to be lacking footing.
"Children of Earth" tells a harrowing story at a gripping pace - with only five hours of season time - and succeeds even for this uninitiated one.
So I'd say that you might be more enamored with this particular season than you were with TORCHWOOD.
In retrospective, I think that seeing those four very strong characters (Gwen, Ianto, Rhys and Jack) dealing with this particular world threat is what made me seek out the first two seasons, to find out all I could about their respective backstories. . .

A tribute to Mr. Cronkite's catchphrase; I always thought of him when I heard Celine Dion sing

I'm glad to know she's nice.  I love her Mercer albuym and her versions of Skylark and I Remember You (among others).

I like the album Bruce did with her too.
