Dear Bruce: Dr. Chew ASSAULTED you! There is no excuse for a dentist to give anyone pain. You were obviously experiencing him drilling into a nerve or nerve cluster. Had you had no novocaine, you'd likely have been on the ceiling, but the bottom line is this: Dr. Chew needed to find an alternative way of alleviating your pain. Many dentists are loath to exceed a certain dosage of whatever anesthetic they use, and there's likely a valid medical reason for that.
I, however, am a person for whom all shots do NOT work. Nine times out of ten, the dentist numbs me up perfectly. But it's that tenth time when no matter how many shots I get, the tooth needing attention doesn't seem to be affected. My entire face can be numb...you could yank out every other tooth in my mouth...you could pierce my tongue....and I'd feel nothing, nada, zip. But touch the drill to the tooth in question and I need to be strapped to the chair to keep me from levitating out of it with brute force.
NEXT TIME: Make it so clear that he cannot possibly misunderstand -- He is not to give you pain. The first sign of pain is instant cessation of drilling and he must find a way to anesthetize the tooth.
I fully understood every comment you made regarding your experience. It is agonizing pain and anyone who has ever experienced it felt it when you described it.
