So...

I take my seat in the first tier, and as I'm waiting for the rehearsal to start - and there was still a good 45 minutes before the downbeat - I decided to strike up a conversation with the young(er) man sitting next to me.  He mentions that, in addition to being an airline pilot - at the still relatively young age of 28! -  he plays violin and that he will soon be heading back up to his alma mater, Holy Cross, in a couple of weeks to play a concert with the orchestra there.  I ask if he knows "Eric", and, lo and behold, he does.

Eric is a friend of mine who was at Catholic University at the same time I was there as part of the school's accompanying staff.  He was getting his Doctorate in Conducting, and he landed the job up at Holy Cross right after finishing his DMA.  So, it turned out that Brendan started at Holy Cross the same year that Eric started there as a professor.  And Eric will be conducting the orchestra in a few weeks, and Brendan will be one of the soloists.  Small world!

After the rehearsal, we grabbed lunch up at Ollie's, and then, since he's relatively new in town, I took him up to Levain for dessert.  Then we walked up to Zabar's - he had never been - then we walked back to Central Park South to grab an espresso at Cafe Zibetto.

Then I headed over to MoMA, and he headed home to practice.

On the way to MoMA, a couple from Guatemala was asking people on the sidewalk how to get to the Museum, well...  I told them just to follow me since I was heading over there, and, that since I'm a member, I could get them in for $5 instead of $20.  And I did.

Then after another pass through Monet's "Water Lilies", and the Ron Arad gallery, I headed back home.

-Yes, a very good day.

That's actually Zach's costume while he's listening to Paul's monologue.

DOCTOR UPDATE

Going to have to go for another test next week, but the doctor thinks there is a vein problem. Will get compression stocking to help out but there is also laser surgery to repair the problem vein. So this answers the leg problem. Next week back and neck.

DR DAKOTA CELT....my avatar is an example of Kirlian Photography.  A special high voltage camera is used.  Some people can sense or see the auras, but photography is a more reliable indication of the electrical energy charge you emit.

The aura photograph is not considered true Kirlian photography by purists.

You can have such a photo taken at most New Age bookstores.

DR Julie - There were plenty of tickets to this morning's New York Philharmonic open rehearsal.  The line on the plaza looked long, but even as I was heading in to Avery Fisher Hall, the young woman holding the "Line Starts Here" sign was still out - and there were still people getting in line.  -And there were plenty of available seats inside too.

As for the rehearsal itself, it was very good.  Because they are broadcasting the concert tonight on PBS, they had to go ahead and run the first half without stopping during the pieces for camera blocking purposes.

The commissioned piece by Marcus Lindberg is quite good, and really acts as a showcase for the orchestra.  Alas, I was not that impressed by the Messiaen, "Poemes pour Mi" featuring Renée Fleming.  They just seemed like an odd fit for the opening program, and even though Ms. Fleming was marking during the rehearsal, they just didn't seem like a good fit for her voice either.  -At least to my ears.  It's the first time that she's performed these songs, so maybe they just need a little more time to settle into her voice, body, mind and soul.  The texts are filled with lots of religious imagery, and I never got the sense that she was fully embodying the deeply spiritual and ecstatic spirit of the songs.  -I could also tell that she was still counting a bit with her heel.  -I'll have to watch tonight's broadcast to see if having her sing out fully "fixes" things for me.

The second half of the program consists of Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" - and, boy, was it ever!

DR elmore - If you buy the movie tickets from the kiosks, you can just punch in that your a senior citizen, and only pay the senior citizen rate.  -They never check the IDs when they collect the tickets.  Heck, there have been times when I've truly accidentally hit "Children's" on the kiosk, and even tried to have the Customer Service desk "fix" it.  They've always said to just go in.

OH!

When they gave out the tickets this morning, they also handed out a slip of paper advertising their "Mobile Entertainment".  If you texted a certain number, then you could receive the program notes and links to sound clips for tonight's program.  They were also running a contest for some merchandise.  Well...

As I was leaving Lincoln Center, a text popped up on my iPhone... It turns out that I won an autographed (by Maestro Alan Gilbert) Opening Night Program!

And I have to say...

If anyone is looking for subjects for a new documentary or even a "reality television" show, well, look no further than some of the "Cultural Freebie Vultures" here in NYC.  Some people had lined up at 5:30 this morning for the free tickets - and, apparently, they line up that early any time free tickets are being given away.  They even plan strategies for when an event is general admission - like today's was.

They come prepared with portable folding chairs and box breakfast and lunches.  And, boy, do they get competitive!  One particularly "colorful" and curmudgeonly lady in front of me, made sure that everyone in line around her knew that she was in her space in line and that no one else was to get in front of her.  -Even when she decided to step out of line in order to talk to someone a little further back.  There was a gentleman behind me who also does the Freebie thing regularly, and he and this woman had some lively exchanges during the course of the wait.  They were also in line on Sunday for the free tickets for tomorrow's Metropolitan Opera open dress rehearsal.  And as we passed the guards and house managers, they all seemed to know, and even joked(?) with her, reminding her that she had been banned from the hall.  And other halls in the city.  Quite the character!

I am an art idiot, but even I know that the photo from the Paris casino is Monet, not "Van Gogh blobs."

I'd have to agree.  -Especially since I just saw Monet's Water Lilies again just a few hours ago.

This may be "old news" from some denizens of HHW, but, since it just popped up on my Twitter feed:

Bernard Herrmann's 'Torn Curtain' Rejected Score

That's Part 1 of 4.  Just check the sidebar for the remaining 3 parts.

You are far from an "art idiot", DR Laura.  The idiots are those who cannot see nor appreciate the beauty in a casino carpet.
