DR DERBRUCER - As for yesterday's mention of Monkey Bread...

Amy's Bread here in NYC serves "Monkey Cake". However, they do sell something called a "Cinnamon Pull Apart" every now and then which is similar to "Monkey Bread". In any case...

I'm sort of surprised the article didn't mention the classic Monkey Bread "cheat": pre-made (frozen) bread dough or biscuit dough. In a way, it sort of reminded me of those "from scratch" recipes for "Green Bean Casserole" and "Dump Cake". Sometimes all of those refinements take the "comfort" out of "comfort food". True comfort food should not only be a comfort to eat, but also to make.

I had a full evening of viewing, and I got to see many things.

I began with last Friday's MONK episode. This was the one with Bitty Schram returning in a guest role as Sharona, Monk's original "assistant." (More like caretaker.) It was an OK mystery, and while it was nice to see Bitty again, I think I prefer Natalie now to Sharona.

Then I watched SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. It's a fine film, and while I understood why Boyle won Best Director, I really don't get why the movie was such a darling of Hollywood. Now, I haven't seen the other three nominated movies for Best Picture from last year (I've only seen MILK and now SLUMDOG), but I have to say I couldn't understand EIGHT Oscars going to this.

Then I watched the last PERRY MASON episode on disc one from the Season 1 set that I started weeks ago but had to put on hold due to the influx of so many work discs.

Mason was out of his element trying a case in a small town. He won, of course, but it was funny seeing him completely overpower the small little courtroom and townsfolk.

I concluded my evening with tonight's TRAUMA. It's a very mediocre series. Has some good actors (Jamey Sheridan is one of the doctors; Larry Sullivan was a guest star tonight), but unlike GREY'S ANATOMY, you don't get to spend long enough with the emergency patients, so nothing really takes hold. The gay storyline was pretty cookie-cutter in construction and execution.

I saw "Slumdog Millionaire" in a movie theatre. Twice. And I have to say that both times the energy in the theatre was truly electric, visceral. Everyone was just with the movie, and that just added to the excitement of the whole movie watching experience.

I'm wondering if the "feel good" aspect of "Slumdog" gave it the edge over "Milk" and the other nominees.

Feel good/wish-fulfillment fantasy type movie I'm sure played a major part in its triumph. Maybe after all the horrible economic news of last year, something like this was what people needed to lift their spirits.

I found it very good, but I'd never classify it as a great movie. I would have given Best Picture to WALL-E over this, hands down. (Of course, WALL-E wasn't nominated.) I'm sure I'll get around to BENJAMIN BUTTON, FROST/NIXON, and THE READER in the next couple of months.

I have now climbed the stairs for the last time, under the influence of Doug's killer cosmopolitans and a lovely dinner wine. We had stuffed pork chops, mixed harvest veggies, and broccoli for dinner and key lime somethings from Magnolia Bakery for dessert. He and Jon are wonderful hosts.

Our day started with a delightful lunch with Ben and Anthony at The Cottage. Afterwards, Anthony escorted Richard and me to the Strand bookstore and then to FedEx/Kinkos for me to ship my Dawn Powell haul back to Ohio. Anthony put us on the 6th Ave. bus and we went to Lincoln Center to see the 50th anniversary exhibit at the NYPL and happened across a recital of material from new musicals. We only stayed for about half of that before proceeding to our friends' home for dinner.

A lovely Monday in Manhattan.
