Last night, I saw BK's close and personal friend, "Stephen Sondheim and Frank Rich in Conversation" in Seattle!  I didn't get an autograph and my question was not answered, and this is the only picture that I was able to get:

<SNIP>

BUT I LOVED IT!! ;D Also, before the "Conversation," I saw yesterday's Birthday Boy DR Jed and his very lovely wife, DR Ann in the lobby!  And I agree with Jed...I wish that they could've gone on for another hour, too!

Thanks, Jane, I did have a wonderful time!

George, is Mr. Sondheim urinating in the corner of the stage?

No.

Did anybody else watch last night's SYTYCD special episode?  They wanted to introduce the top 20 since sometimes we do not know half the people.

It wasn't what i was expecting. I thought that they would show more of the vegas stuff. So we could see the people.

Although what they did was quite special. They separated people into their genre (contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, tap...) and then they had the pros choreograph them in groups.

I must say i loved this idea!  That first hip-hop routine, and the last ballroom were spectacular.

Although too bad one of the contemporary boys had to withdraw (billy bell).

One of the contemporary boys is suffering from billy bell?

Woke up to a loooonggg yet fascinating email from Rex Lawson, the world's leading Pianola player, whose work is featured on the new Grieg piano roll Blu-ray I just reviewed.  My first reaction was, of course, "Nyah, nyah, TCB, someone read my review!"  ;)

I'll wager Rex doesn't have much else to do.

I have scrapbooking pages laying out all over the dining room table.

I have not done any scrapbooking in a couple of months. So i have pics from july, and august to do (i have not yet printed out my sept/oct pics).

I have 7 layouts (pictures and paper) with ribbons. I just need some ideas. That is usually why it takes me so long. I don't normally do a page until i know exactly what i am doing.

But this time i decided to organize the pictures and paper and do all the layouts at the same time. I finished one. And have 3 others partially complete.

Speaking of Lenora Nemetz. . . .I once duetted on CITY OF ANGEL's "You're Nothing Without Me," impromptu, with Lenora at a party given by CMU and CLO mIni-stars vocal coach Roseanna Irwin.  It was a treat.

Topic of the Day:  every year at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, they have their big fund raiser called CenterFest.  They used to bring in a big name (Bernadette Peters, Wynonna Judd, The Pointer Sisters, etc.), but they found that the big names cost more than what they make, so for the last couple of years, they've only had a big party for the monied people (and it'll probably stay that way).  One year, they brought in Gregory Hines.  He was fantastic!  He sang and danced with a band behind him.  The energy that he had was incredible!  And then brought up tappers from the audience and worked with them.  It was wonderful.  He put on one of the best shows that I had seen there.

But then he died later that same year of liver cancer (according to IMDb).  Who knew that he would die so shortly after being able to put on that kind of show. :-\

It might have been a result of visiting Olympia.

He'll need just a little help getting the Pianola mechanism (and the concert Steinway grand he uses) up there.  I told him you'd be happy to help.

As for the Topic of the Day... Sort of...

No one will ever dance like Gene Castle.  No one will ever dance like Donna McKechnie.  No one will ever dance like Wayne Cilento... No one will ever dance like (fill in the blank)... -It's just not physically possible.  -This is particularly true of Donna McKechnie in regards to "Turkey Lurkey Time" and "Music and the Mirror".  Those dances were choreographed for her, on her.  Any time I had to play a rehearsal for a new "Cassie", I never envied the young women who had to re-create a set of steps and body vocabulary that were not made for them specifically.  Yes, some very minor adjustments were made from time to time, but since they were part of the revival - a recreation - they had to do the steps.  In a sense, it was a no-win situation.  If the choreography had been changed and adapted to the new Cassie, the new dancer, then there would have most certainly been cries of "blasphemy" from the, for lack of a better word right now, traditionalists.  But even when some of the new Cassie's nailed the choreography, it still never looked nor "felt" the same as it did when Donna McKechnie did it.

I guess I should point out that Michael Bennett did change things for certain dancers if he recognized that certain things just did not "fit"right.  I know a few dancers from the last company of A Chorus Line that Mr. Bennett supervised, and they all mentioned that "Michael" had wanted to re-choreograph more than a couple of chunks of the show in order to customize it to the strengths of that company.  Alas, since the choreography of A Chorus Line attained iconic status in a relatively short amount of time, he had to "re-stage" and "re-create" rather than "refresh".

*And since I've been fortunate to have worked alongside Baayork Lee and have a peek into her "bible", I've seen some of the other "options" that Michael Bennett came up with for not only "Music and the Mirror", but also "I Can Do That" (there are at least three "official" versions) and some of the ensemble sections in the Montages.

There are some wonderful dancers and choreographers out there right now.  As to whether their work is making it to the Broadway stage, well... Yes, Broadway shows still have dancing, however, I don't think anyone is writing or producing a "Dance Show".  Even when a new show features dance, it's all kept in balance with the other elements of acting and singing.  -Or you get purely choreographic pieces like Contact and Movin' Out.  -Heck, even Cats was basically a dance piece.

I loved the dancing in In the Heights.  It was never really flashy or attention-getting, but it wasn't meant to function that way in the show.  The Drowsy Chaperone had some wonderful choreographic moments, but did I leave the theatre thinking about the dancing? No. I left the theatre thinking what a great show I had just seen (in general).

In the world of ballet there seems to be an automatic given that the same choreography will look different from one ballerina to the next.  Choreographers and the audience(!) know that no two dancers bodies are alike, so, of course, the resulting choreography will look different.  Different arms, different legs, extensions, lifts, suppleness.  Comparisons are inevitably made in regards to how the original ballerina danced the part, but there seems to be less of a sense of "the original was the right one".

Hmmm.  I wonder if the bold decision to stage the evening with Mr. Sondheim's back facing the audience made the sound designer's work more difficult last night?  ???

Thanks for the photo, George - glad you had a wonderful time!

As for the Topic of the Day... Sort of... Part Deux...

I have seen dancers who LOVE to dance on stage. (And more often in the audition and rehearsal room.)  I do think, however, that since there are less shows being produced nowadays, there are less opportunities for "jazz dancers", "Fosse dancers", "modern dancers", "Bennett dancers", etc. to remain gainfully and consistently employed.  In today's "biz", dancers have to be extremely well-rounded and multi-"styled"... No one can afford to specialize in just one particular style right now.  Everyone has to be very good at everything: jazz, modern, ballet and tap (at least).  -And that's what the college and university musical theatre programs seem to stress now too.

*Even A Chorus Line only features ballet and tap in 16-bar combinations, each of which are repeated a number of times in a row.  -Baayork Lee - as she will freely admit - still can't teach the tap dance section properly.  She never was, and still isn't a tapper.

Is all of that "well-roundedness" contributing a sense of the generic to today's dancers and choreography?

Discuss.

;)
