I was going to buy myself a Kindle to take on the cruise, but instead I guess I will just pack a few used paperbacks.

Does your ship have a library?

DR TCB - Couldn't you have just hailed a taxi when you got to port?

Well, the Port of Civitavecchia is actually 45 miles from Rome.  Since I have never been to Rome before, and since my Italian is minimal, it was easier to just suck it up, than to risk missing the ship.

Actually it does, and a very nice one.

Well, isn't that what tipping the porter is for?  ;)

Well, the price for the transfer in Euros didn't sound nearly as bad. I guess the U.S. dollar doesn't buy what it used to buy.

I recieved my cruise documents this week.  This is my first cruise in seven years, so it was kind of a shock to have all the documents delivered by e-mail.  I used to love to get the whole packet of plane tickets and ship tickets and shore excursions; and go through them one by one.  The e-mail version is not nearly as exciting, but I guess it saved the life of a tree.

Since I booked my own hotel reservation in Rome, at one third the price the cruise line would have charged me for the same hotel; the cruise line will not allow me to buy a space on their transfer bus from the hotel to the ship.  So, today my travel agent booked me a separate transfer, at a cost of $175.00 U.S.!!!

Then why not take a cab?  The taxi driver can unload your luggage & there should be someone from the cruise to tag it and take it from you.

I know what you mean about the email documents.  This was our first time with them and it was strange.  I find it easier to check out the excursions on line than in the cruise book, which we still received along with our luggage tags and a few other items.

I'm sure they will also be happy to received any paperbacks you wish to donate, once you are done reading them of course.

I should have remembered this.  We originally were going to fly to Rome and then take the train to the Amalfi Coast, before we decided to take the cruise to the Baltic.  I still want to see the Amalfi Coast & look forward to your photos.  I doubt you will be posting from the ship, simply too pricey.

From everything I read online last night, a taxi would not be any cheaper than the shuttle bus that I have booked.  It is based on the distance the port is from the center of Rome.   It is lucky I didn't decide on a limo, that would have cost me 500, and that is in Euros.

DR TCB is your hotel savings still better than the cost of taking their bus?  I would think so.

Oh yes.  Oceania wanted $900.00+ for two nights at the Grand Beverly Hills Hotel.  I paid less than a third of that, so even with the transfer costs, I still came out way ahead.

It just came as kind of a shock when they told me the cost.  I was thinking maybe $60 or $80, so I was a little stunned.  I will get over it, once I pay the credit card bill.

For a second, I thought that you had written "Oceanic" and was thinking, What?  It really exists?? :o

;)

(If anyone doesn't know, it's the airline on "Lost.")

Yes, for three of them

A half day Pompeii tour
An all-day tour of Florence
A full day in Pisa

I still may book the Monte Carlo tour.

Of course the WICKED ites and SPRING AWAKENING crowd Conrad Birdie fans over at ATC and BROADWAY WORLD can't understand how such a boring and outdated show can possibly be entertaining.

Yes, for three of them

A half day Pompeii tour
An all-day tour of Florence
A full day in Pisa

I still may book the Monte Carlo tour.

In Florence we had the best Ribollita (tuscan bean) soup.  If you can be sure to try this.  It takes several days to make.

In Pisa we had the best 4 pizza ever, a 4 cheese pizza.  I also had an incredible caramel, or caramel swirl, gelato.  It was exceptional gelato even by Italian standards.   Overall my favorite flavor was stracciatella.  Except for the 2 days I was sick I had at least one cone a day.    Near the end of the trip when I knew I might never have anything as good again, and I haven't, I had 2 cones a day.
