In other news, I had to get up "early" to check in and take care of a few "early" things - mainly two phone calls and then a resulting email.  And now that those tasks are done, I believe I shall head back to bed and listen to NPR for a bit.

Thursday morning greetings!  Today Richard and I have to go to our former church to attend a memorial service for a lovely lady who worked at the local Miami campus at the same time I did.  She was also a cast member when I stage-directed "A Festival of Hymns" back in 2003.  RIP, Sue.

I don't know! He had left Middletown by 1988 or thereabouts.

TOD:

The problem with remakes is that, if you remake a classic...or even just a successful film, you will always be competing with the memory of the original.  Therefore, you should only remake flops.

Or, you could take the basic characters and plot of that successful film and transport them to a new setting.  BROKEN LANCE (1954) with Spencer Tracy was a remake of HOUSE OF STRANGERS (1949) with Edward G. Robinson, except one was a western and the other a "modern" film noir.  Both were excellent and successful, because they really didn't compete with each other.

The best remake in the history of movies for me is THE MALTESE FALCON. It was actually the third version of the story, but it got everything right, and I never tire of watching it.

I'll be spending another day on ZORRO and am looking forward to more episodes. If I can manage it, I'd like to take a few minutes to watch Kathy Griffin's stand-up special, but that will be toward the end of the afternoon.

SInce the World Series is over (I'm sure my brother is celebrating; he's a big Yankees fan), that means BONES and FRINGE will be back tonight with new episodes. Yay!

I think Alfred Hitchcock accomplished something wonderful by remaking one of his own movies - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and doing it with such style.

I know lots of people prefer the original British version, but I'm not one of them. I far prefer the remake, and it's probably near the top of my most wanted Blu-ray Hitchcock films.

As for NORTH BY NORTHWEST, I can't wait to see it on Blu-ray. My copy has shipped, but I'm really not expecting it until tomorrow. I likely won't get a chance to see it until Saturday or Sunday.

I've been informed that Fox has put the Blu-ray review copies of SAY ANYTHING and TWO GIRLS AND A GUY in the mail for me. They should get here today or tomorrow. SAY ANYTHING will likely be my work project for tomorrow provided I finish up with ZORRO today.

Agreed.  But, the first 2 versions were flops.

What I don't understand is why anyone would make a remake of a successful movie. Why don't they just remake flops into successful movies?

I can't come up with a remake that I liked.  Of course we could spend days on remakes that we disliked around these parts!  I do like the TV version of "Bye Bye Biridie" that was done in 1995 or so only because it restores the original story from the musical and a good part of the score that was not included in the Ann-Margaret version.  But I'm not sure that counts...

I guess I never got the point of view of the Mercer documentary except...."and then he wrote.....".....and it wasn't even in much of a chronological order.  I liked the old TV variety show clips....but many of them were too short.

Nice to hear Dinah Shore when she could really sing.

Right...the filmmaker never wanted the story to be chronological, and that was one of the most frustrating things. He never failed to say that J'M's story was "boring". So J.M. had to be linked to any soundbite where a famous author or collaborator is mentioned instead of just the greatness of the music selling itself.

I gained a new appreciation of Dinah from working on this. She seemed like a really nice lady!
