I love that kind of fireplace DR JMK. I'm assuming it's open on the livingroom side as well.   Way cool.  If you make an offer vibes that it's accepted right away~~~

Just relaxing.  I actually already wrote part one of tomorrow's notes, since I knew they would be longer than usual.  I watched a bit of The Music Man in hi-def - and hoping that it was made from the DVD transfer and NOT the new Blu-Ray transfer, because frankly it didn't look very good at all, either color-wise or sharpness-wise.  On the other hand, Funny Girl in hi-def looks pretty terrific.

Last night I watched the Johnny Mercer doc and while it it was talking-headish and the C.E. footage was useless and there was no point of view and it jumped from place to place, I still enjoyed it.  I found it very interesting that Mercer was more than an oddity in being a songsmith who performed his own tunes and that he was a talented interpreter of his material. I also e joyed seeing the television clips from the 50s and 60s--very magical even if they were way too short.

No, it wasn't a perfect stew, but there are a lot of tasty bits in there.

Today, I'm going to see a play called "Ladies of the Alamo."  I've never hear of it, but a friend is in it, so I'm going to go.  And it starts in a hour!  Gotta get ready.

Have a good day, all!

I saw the original production when it tried out in Philly.  Estelle Parsons, Eileen Heckart and Rosemary Murphy.  A lot of bitchy fun with a bizzare turn.

I've been watching two different productions of SWAN LAKE tonight: Nureyev's for the Paris opera Ballet and the Teatro La Scala production with Roberto Bolle, who reminds me at times of Brent Barrett. Both are peculiar and veer away from other productions: the Nureyev televised in 2004, long after Nureyev's death, was built by him as a star vehicle for himself, and I thought the Prince of 2004 had neither the looks nor the ego to pull it off. It's rather a gay slant, not as homoerotic as Matthew Bourne's, but there is this strange hangup on betrayal, with the character of the Prince's best friend doubling as the wicked sorceror who transforms straying princesses into swans. The LaScala production uses a revision of the ballet from the 1950s by a Russian choreographer named Bourmeister which goes back to the original Tchaikovsky score before it was revised and messed around with by choreographers after Tchaikovsky's death. I'm still in it, but I think it has a happy ending and in an unfortunate turn of events, Bourmeister turns the Prince's best friend into a campy little prancing court jester who gets way too much time in my book.

I still like the London Festival Ballet production choreographed by Makarova the best.

Fun photos DR td. :)  Bryan also had a nice day at the zoo today, in Lincoln Park.  It was 70 degrees and beautiful so they hopped on the train & checked out the free zoo.  It was a nice break after 2 grueling weeks of exams.

I liked a lot of the LaScala production. Svetlana Zakharova is amazing in the double role of Odette (Swan Queen)/Odile (Black Swan). Her black swan, daughter of the evil sorceror, is one mean bitch; makes you wonder why Prince Siegfried is so easily fooled by such a calculating, cold villainess. Bourmeister also improves the traditional Act Three by making all of the national dances pawns of the sorceror so they're kind of like smoke screens he throws out to heat up the Prince by having Odile teasing him and keeping away from him until the Big Moment. Act Four is good, with the best drowning I've seen for this ballet, until the Prince conquers the villain - I still don't know how, since this villan can turn girls to swans with no effort at all - and ithere's a happy ending. I lke it better when they both die and their sacrifice kills the sorceror.

There's a new DVD of the lastest Royal Ballet version that was just released. I've gotta catch that one now.
