I guess I'm more "Occasional Reader" than "Dear Reader" (though I do read Bruce's notes daily, I don't get into the forums to post)...

Hi everyone!

For anyone interested, here is a link to my father's rather detailed account of one of the more important 60th Infantry campaigns in WWII, the battle to take Port Lyautey:

My father somehow forgot to mention in these memoirs that one of his first official acts was "liberating" the Lyautey house of ill repute, which was then evidently visited with great regularity by his soldiers.  :)

This is, perhaps, the genesis of my first grade article which I've mentioned here where, having learned to spell phonetically, I talked about my Dad being in the whore.

This is the beautiful historic Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City which my father prevented from being raized in the 1970s.  He was Senior Officer there for more than 40 years:

That is the General M.B. Kauffman building which houses the Military Museum which he founded and in front of which I and my family are standing in our avatar pic.

And finally here is the Wikipedia article on Fort Douglas, with a gorgeous picture of the Museum snowclad.  The article mentions my father in the 1945-1991 section:

I think my father was most famaous for the battle to take back the Sitka, Alaska Liquor Store in 1944.

And tomorrow you begin your Italian trip?

Picked up the package and am awaiting arrival of person to hook it up - it's an all-region Blu-Ray player so I can finally play my all-region Blu-Ray discs.  Pretty inexpensive, but unlike my all-region DVD player, this you have to enter a code every time you want to play an all-region Blu or DVD - it's one code and I'm hoping it works simply.  I actually had to Google to find the code - they didn't include it with the player, which is a little odd to me - is one just supposed to DIVINE it?  Mr. Set Up Man will be here at twelve-thirty and we'll see how it all works then.

Heard back re region codes - they forgot to put them in the box!  Brilliant.  They're coming via USPS and they say I'll have them tomorrow or Friday.  Very annoying.  However, I found them online and will probably give that a whirl to see if it works.

We're back from a drive by of an amazing property sort of semi-out in the country.  It's on 14 acres and the house has (no I'm not kidding) over 8000 sf.  (A lot of that is an amazing Olympic sized indoor swimming pool).  The owners lost the property, it's been foreclosed and the bank owns it now and they're asking less than half of what it was listed for originally.  It definitely needs some spit and polish, but it's interesting enough I've asked my realtor to schedule a walkthrough for Friday.  The views were spectacular.

Happy Veterans Day to those who served in the military!

Ask BK:

What was it like working with Lauren Bacall on her duet with Brent?
