FIRST U.S. MARIJUANA CAFE OPENS IN PORTLAND

PORTLAND, Oregon —  The United States' first marijuana cafe opened on Friday, posing an early test of the Obama administration's move to relax policing of medical use of the drug.

The Cannabis Cafe in Portland, Oregon, is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it — as long as they are out of public view — despite a federal ban.

"This club represents personal freedom, finally, for our members," said Madeline Martinez, Oregon's executive director of NORML, a group pushing for marijuana legalization.

"Our plans go beyond serving food and marijuana," said Martinez. "We hope to have classes, seminars, even a Cannabis Community College , based here to help people learn about growing and other uses for cannabis."

The cafe — in a two-story building which formerly housed a speak-easy and adult erotic club Rumpspankers — is technically a private club, but is open to any Oregon residents who are NORML members and hold an official medical marijuana card.
…
"I still run a coffee shop and events venue, just like I did before we converted it to the Cannabis Cafe, but now it will be cannabis-themed," said Eric Solomon, the owner of the cafe, who is looking forward to holding marijuana-themed weddings, film festivals and dances in the second-floor ballroom.

I bet there’s a real market for a rural venue with an Olympic Pool to host cannabis themed Bar-Mitzvahs!

Who will mourn the pasing of Rumpspankers!

I have some computer desktop chores to tinker with and then it's back downstairs to finish up with CLERKS before diving in to some TV programs from the last two days.

Today will be a busy one.  I have some reviews to start this morning, then we're off to see the manse, then it's the fall Pacific Pops concert (with former DR JulieC performing "Annie's Song" as her solo), then home to collapse.  If we have to write an offer on this house I may be in a fetal position under my piano by the end of the day.  And I am of course talking about my spinet, not my grand.  :)

Saturday morning greetings!  Being a glutton for punishment, I'm going to watch Michigan football today.  Rob has his last 4 hours of EMT clinicals with the local fire department.

DR Elmore - thanks for the inside info about White Christmas.  We're all looking forward to kicking off our holiday season with this performance.  By the way, I forgot to mention that Christmas is six weeks from yesterday.

DR Jane - Thank You for the update on DR Danise.  Even though she may be "homeless" at this point, it is good to know that she has a (hotel) roof over her head.

In other news...

I ended up spending a good chunk of yesterday afternoon trying to take care of a rather "frustrating" situation. Thankfully, after a couple of hours of running around - and stressing out - I was able to fix said situation - at least temporarily. Just as I was wrapping things up, a friend called and invited me to dinner with some other friends... Which was just what I needed after dealing so much agita.  And after a nice dinner, some sparking conversation, as well as a few glasses of a port, I felt that I should go right to bed and get some sleep.  And I did.  Eight hours laters... Ahhhh... :)

-And thus explains my E&T'ness last night.

Good morning, all! I slept later than I meant to, but I'm susing my cld as a justification.  I have my usual work on the table: Moross, Kern,  and two acts of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.  First thing, I have to send an email turning down a job; much as I want to do the show, the  deadlines and pay don't make it possible.

I am floored to learn the identity of Amicus Curiae. I would also like to know theidentity of pgenre, who, it appears, occasionally puts in a lurk here as well as posting on AllThatChat.

Girl groups: The Boswell Sisters, The Andrews Sisters, The Supremes

One of my mother's brothers dated Phyllis McGuire in high school, I forget which one now. While the McGuire Sisters bios always refer to Miamisburg, OH, since their mother had a church there, Middletown is never mentioned and the ladies went to Middletown High. When I was growing up, the McGuire Sisters were paragons on Middletown's fine youth succeeding in the wordl. All that changed after Phyllis got mixed up with the mafia.

As for the Topic of the Day...

One of the first songs that pops into my head is "Aurora" as sung by the Andrew Sisters... As well as an over-dubbed Michelle Nicastro. ;)

The Ronettes version of "Sleigh Ride".

"Stop! In The Name of Love" by the Supremes.

The "Hallelujah Chorus" as sung by The Roches.

And speaking of "The Red Shoes"...  Did any other DRs catch Maureen Dowd's "appreciation" of "The Red Shoes" in the New York Times?

LATIMES

Quote
As far as the new disaster film "2012" is concerned, the world will end with both a bang and a whimper, the bang of undeniably impressive special effects and the whimper of inept writing and characterization. You pays your money, you takes your chances.

Audiences with a hankering for the apocalypse shrug off the ridiculous and sit tight for the special effects. In this case, they are worth the wait.

But, boy, will it sell tickets!

We shall be going for the special effects & John Cusack is a bonus.

So it costs $50 to get a membership card to Costco to be able to get inside the door?  Good luck to them in Manhattan.  They are going to need to come up with some free trial membership, I suspect.
