As for the Topic of the Day...

One of the first songs that pops into my head is "Aurora" as sung by the Andrew Sisters... As well as an over-dubbed Michelle Nicastro. ;)

I know I'll get reprimanded for saying so ... (One more today! Who cares!) but it's

The AndrewS Sisters!

I know, they even make that error on some cd's!

Andrews, like Dame Julie.

I'm guilty of doing that, thank you for the reminder.

I watched last night's UGLY BETTY first. Good episode. Adam Rodriguez was very appealing, loved the Justin storyline, but the Wilhemina subplot is getting tiresome.

Then I watched SUPERNATURAL while I ate lunch. Very good, very funny episode with lots of faux-Deans and Sams. And the ending with the two guys was a nice surprise.

Yes, let's Move On!

Life's too short and too precious!

Let's send vibes to DR Danise.
I sure would not like to be in her shoes (Male size 13 ?!  :)) right now.

I also watched last night's WHITE COLLAR. Good episode. Does Garrett Dillahunt have a contract with all the production houses that he must guest star in some show every week? He seems to be the most in-demand guest star there is nowadays. (And I'm not complaining; he's always excellent, but he certainly does a lot of guest star roles.)

Jane, I'm not saying it's a possibility it was someone else - it WAS someone else and I have stated my belief as to who that someone is.  And did you miss that post, because it also includes an apology to Francois.

I missed the apology & will look for it.  I did read your declaration yesterday is was Francois which made me sad.

One of my favourite girl-group songs:

YOU COULD DRIVE A PERSON CRAZY!

I like the male version too ... and on a BK cd produced, with the Cassidy Brothers!

One of my favorite Wisconsin jokes which Betsy told me early in our courtship is that she was 25 before she realized polka bands weren't the traditional musical fare at weddings.

they aren't?

Back from having an egg salad sandwich and a piece of cake.  Eating the piece of cake was a piece of cake and now I want to vomit on the ground.  Other than writing a blurb, I shall do no other work today.

I just talked to a friend who braved the "madhouse" at the new CostCo this morning.  From what he could tell, it looked like most people already had memberships, but he said he did notice that a lot of people were also signing up.

As for cars and/or the lack thereof - he said the gypsy cabs were doing great business there.  Those town cars can hold a lot of stuff.  He also ran into a bunch of his neighbors from the UWS - who happen to have cars and storage space (almost) in their apartments and condos.  He also noticed that some of the "bulk" items were not that bulky, so I guess they're customizing their inventory according to their clientele and area.  -Which is sort of like what Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have done with their special NYC-lines of furniture which are sized just a few inches smaller than regular "home-sized" furnishings.

Good to know.  Thanks for sharing the reports.

I look forward to checking the place out myself in the near future.
I shall put on DAW's best pair of red shoes to make sure I make a proper entrance.

Lots of Johnny Mercer tributes to listen to!

Pardon My Southern Accent

Friday Night is Mercer Night is a special evening on Radio 2 celebrating the birth centenary of the great lyricist Johnny Mercer. In the first programme, the singer and actor Clarke Peters, explores the way in which Johnny Mercer's birthplace - Savannah, Georgia - influenced his songs.

Although Johnny Mercer found fame in Hollywood and on Broadway, he came from a very different background to most of his fellow songwriters. While they were often urban New Yorkers, Mercer was a country boy at heart and took every opportunity to go back to his beloved Savannah in the American South where he grew up. The images with which he was surrounded, such as moss, birds, pine trees, trains and of course deep rivers, made their way into songs like Moon River, Blues In The Night and Lazybones. His early experiences of African-American music and rhythms led him to an understanding of jazz idioms and an ability to mix the vernacular with the abstract in his work.

Clarke Peters tells the story of Mercer's earliest years in Savannah and how the place influenced him all through his life. There are new interviews with the singer Andy Williams, the lyricist Alan Bergman and the jazz pianist and singer Daryl Sherman, as well as Mercer's daughter Amanda and his niece Nancy. In addition there are voices from the archive including Mercer himself, Bing Crosby and Henry Mancini.

Live from The Mermaid

BBC Radio 2 celebrates the centenary of the birth of one of the great lyricists of our time - Johnny Mercer - with acclaimed American singer-songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers presenting a special Friday Night Is Music Night, live from London's Mermaid Theatre.

Everybody knows a Mercer song - Lazybones, Hooray For Hollywood, Jeepers Creepers, Fools Rush In, Come Rain Or Come Shine, Moon River - to name just a few.

An all-star line-up from the world of musical theatre and TV - Sally Ann Triplett (Mamma Mia), Ruthie Henshall (Woman In White) , and Nigel Harman (Guys & Dolls / EastEnders) - and, of course, Curtis Stigers himself - will be bringing the Mercer songbook to life - with the help of the 70-piece BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Tony award-nominated Larry Blank.

Manilow and Mercer

The final programme of Friday Night is Mercer Night sees the international superstar Barry Manilow present his own personal view of Johnny Mercer.

After the death of Johnny Mercer, his widow Ginger found a selection of his lyrics which appeared never to have been set to music. She approached Barry Manilow and asked him to compose melodies for them. Manilow's first song with the Mercer lyrics, When October Goes, has become a standard and many others have followed, recorded by the likes of Nancy Wilson, Monica Mancini and of course Manilow himself. Barry Manilow talks about the work he did to set the lyrics. We hear examples from recordings and others which have never before been released.

In addition, Barry Manilow tells the story of Mercer's later years and analyses how his genius developed. We hear about the way in which Mercer kept finding opportunities to write, even when the fashion for musical films was fading. There's a glimpse into Johnny Mercer's personal relationships, including an affair with Judy Garland. And there are insights into his final pieces of work and his last recordings.

New interviewees include the singer Andy Williams; the conductor and composer Andre Previn, who wrote a London stage musical with Mercer; and the lyricist Alan Bergman, to whom Mercer was a mentor.
