I finally settled on SAY IT WITH SONGS, Al Jolson's third movie. I've seen THE JAZZ SINGER many times and also THE SINGING FOOL many times on laserdisc from that Al Jolson laserdisc box set, but I had only watched SAY IT WITH SONGS once before on laser.
The Warner Archive release is the same transfer as the laserdisc. Still, it's more convenient to watch than the laser since there is no side break. The movie only runs 86 minutes.
Funny thing about this one. It's actually Al's first all-talkie (the two previous ones had silent sequences in them), and he sings a good bit, but not one of the songs became one of his evergreen standards. You can tell that they wanted "Little Pal" to become as big a hit as "Sonny Boy," but I guess it didn't really catch on.
Al looks the best in this movie than he does in any of his other starring vehicles, and he doesn't do any blackface numbers either.
