Before we hit the road, we stopped for breakfast. I was originally thinking of heading back to The Waffle House, but since I also wanted to make one more stop in Carytown, I figured we should eat at someplace in The Fan. At first, I was thinking that Joe's Inn would be a good place... Then I thought that Can-Can would be good for a
petit déjeuner... Then I thought why not try Sidewalk Cafe. I used to live a few blocks away from there, and had many a weekend breakfast/brunch there. Also, my favorite waitress in the world - who I've mentioned here on HHW before - also used to work there, and, maybe, just maybe she would be in this morning, well...
As soon as I walked in the door, I saw Edwina behind the bar. She saw me walk in. She screamed. -I think I may have screamed too. And a few minutes later, we were exchanging a very long overdue hug. The last time we had seen each other was literally right before I moved to New York City four and a half years ago. I had my "last" breakfast in Richmond at Sidewalk Cafe. And, yes, we were both tearing up. Just a little bit.
Over the course of the next hour, and between bites of my huge breakfast - I ordered my favorite, "Cajun Hash" - we caught up on each other's lives. We also realized that we have known each other for 25 years! My first restaurant meal in Richmond was at Stella's, where Edwina used to work, and for the next 20 years, I more or less followed her from restaurant to restaurant: Stella's to Joe's Inn to Sidewalk Cafe. She "adopted" me, I became one of her "babies". It was nice to see my "mama" again this morning.
She refused to let me pay for our meal this morning, but after a quick run to the store up the street, I did leave her a "tip": two Hershey Bars with Almonds, and two Mr. Goodbars.
