Just back from the Metropolitan Room, where a friend of mine, Gretchen Reinhagen, put on a wonderful show -- a tribute to Kaye Ballard. She did a beautiful job with the songs and the material.

When I went downstairs, I first updated the firmware on my Panasonic Blu-ray player. This took about twenty minutes.

Next, on that player, I watched DR. NO in Blu-ray. I always enjoy revisiting this terrific James Bond picture. The storytelling is so clear and the production just right, before Bond got a case of the BIGs. Aside from GOLDFINGER, this is probably my favorite Bond film.

I didn't have enough time to watch a second movie, so I plucked NCIS - Season One off the shelf and loaded in a disc at random and picked the first episode on the disc.

This was the one wherre Marine recruiters were being murdered, so Gibbs volunteers to be a recruiter to lure the sniper to try to strike again. The first season, of course, had Sasha Alexander as Kate (no Ziva for two seasons), and McGee had not yet joined the team full-time. (Sean Murray is not in the episode at all.)

Then I watched tonight's BONES. The murder story would have been more interesting if it hadn't been continually interrupted by the three Stooges (Sweets, Hodgins, and the sad sack lab intern) waiting in line for James Cameron's AVATAR (talk about Fox doing its own product placement!) and flirting with this hideously tattooed girl who was coming on to them. I was watching the show on DVR, so everytime that ridiculous waste of time subplot came on, I sped right through it. The mystery story really got slighted this week.

30 ROCK had a subplot based around the EGOT - the term for someone who's won the big four: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony.

The show itself was pretty lame this week except for one brilliant gag involving the different people on the staff walking in front of a high def camera and watching what it revealed about them. That gag really made me laugh as various people stepped in front of the lens.

Hiya, Julie. Catching up with everyone.

I journey back to La Manse tomorrow to get a bid on what installing a heat pump will cost. We think if we go through with this, since we probably won't start living there until spring at the earliest, we'll just keep the current oil furnace, keep it turned up high enough so that pipes don't freeze, etc., but then next year put in a high efficiency heat pump. There are all sorts of tax incentives, so hopefully it won't give me too much angina.
