Actually, they never sing eight days to Christmas in "Twelve Days to Christmas" from She Loves Me:

Ensemble:
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me. Ooh..

Amalia: Good morning, Mr. Novak.
Georg: Good morning, Ms. Balish. How are you today?
Amalia: Oh, I'm ready for thousands of customers.
Georg: Well, only twelve days to go!

Ensemble/Customers:

Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la la
Fa la la la

Twelve days to Christmas,
Twelve days to Christmas,
Plenty of time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who shop in time, shop in time, plenty of time
These are the people with time to spare who shop at their convenience

Twelve days to Christmas,
Twelve days to Christmas,
Look at the way they do their Christmas shopping
They can go shopping and still remain calm and sedate
These are the people we envy and the people that we hate!

Thank you, Thank you
We'll call again
We'll call again, thank you

Amalia: Quite a day, eh, Mr. Novak?
Georg: It certainly was, Ms. Balish.
Amalia: Oh thank you for the book, it was excellent.
Georg: Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Will you be taking the bus home today, Ms. Balish?
Amalia: Yes, I will.
Georg: May I walk you to the bus stop?
Amalia: Oh, I'd like that Mr. Novak, thank you.

Ensemble/Customers:

Twelve drummers drumming,
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping,
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords a leaping
Nine

Nine days to Christmas,
Nine days to Christmas
Still enough time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who shop in time, shop in time, still enough time
Sensible people who organize the time at their disposal
Nine days to Christmas,
Nine days to Christmas,
Still enough time to do your Christmas shopping
These are the people who plan their days wisely and well
These are the people who shop in time, and they can go to hell!

(Simultaneously)

Cashiers: Thank you, thank you, please call again, do call again, thank you

Customers: Thank you, thank you, we'll call again, we'll call again, thank you

Georg: Are you in a very great hurry today, Ms. Balish?
Amalia: No.
Georg: Well, I thought, maybe a cup of coffee on the way to the bus?
Amalia: I'd love that.

Ensemble/Customers:

Eight maids a milking
Seven swans a swimming
Six geese a laying
Five golden rings

Merry Christmas!

Actually, DR George, this is the dreadful Roundabout revival revision. In the OBC they never sang parts of the Enlish Carol "Twelve Days of Christmas." I think this was a dumb idea of David Loud's or Scott Ellis'. As I said to Sheldon Harnick, when I complained about it, what do a bunch of Hungarians in 1930s Budapest know about a little-known English song that never became popular until the 1950s? The "Five golden rings" music, which is not traditional, was composed by Fredric Austin in the 1920s and he copyrighted it in his published edtion which became the "traditional" one.

So, my path and Ms Clark's did not cross all evening at the rehearsal. We seemed to be always on different sides of the room and that was fine with me. My piece went quite well, the revisions I ojected to went back to my original writing and I think it will be quite stunning. The soloists are good, and the band is getting into it.

Hello, gentle DRs.

I am back from New Jersey, where over the past two days my aunt, my mother, and I baked approximately 900 cookies of 10 different types.

I am exhausted and going to bed.  See you all tomorrow!     :)

Interesting.  I just did a simple search for the lyrics and that was the only version that came up.  I didn't think about which version of the lyrics they were...and the website I found didn't specify.

DR Ron Pulliam - No ditty-bopping.  But I did happen upon two individuals who were "supervising" a promo for Coke Zero.  They had a HUGE bin filled with cans of Coke Zero. When I walked by them, they said, "Free Coke Zero! Free Coke Zero!".  I then asked them if they had to stay out on the sidewalk in the cold until all the cans were gone. I got a very "knowing" nod.  "Take a couple of cans. Take some for your friends. Take one for now. Take some for later."  So... I did.  I managed to walk away with a six-pack and a half - nine cans total. :)

I prefer diet Pepsi, but I would've taken them, anyway.  Free is free. :D

Same here. I would have becme their best friend VERY fast.

I washed linens today, and while I was changing the sheets and making the bed up, I listened to the Rise Stevens version of LADY IN THE DARK. I hadn't heard this rendition in some time, and it's not bad. I don't have it on CD, just the LP version.

SHE LOVES ME is one of my favorite shows and I was lucky to see two really great productions in New York by 1992: Equity Library Theatre with piano accompaniment and the Opera Ensemble of NY with a full orchestra conducted by Jonathan Tunick who introduced me to Sheldon and a relly good cast including Gregg Edelman as Georg and Davis Gaines as Kodaly. Then the Roundabout's production, far inferior to both, was a hit and Ellis and Loud screwed up the score.

Once I got all of that taken care of this evening, I settled in to watch EVERY LITTLE STEP. This had to have been filmed in 16mm since it was so grainy and the video quality was so poor. Doesn't matter, of course, I really enjoyed the movie. I just wish it could have been two hours longer so we could have seen auditions for some of the other roles: Ritchie, Bobby, Diana. And, of course, Greg and Don, the two roles I played in different versions of the show. They don't get standout stuff like Paul and Mike, of course, but I was still interested in more of the roles that the ones they showed.

One of the two times I ever saw Barbara Cook on stage in a legit show was SHE LOVES ME (the other was the Lincoln Center SHOW BOAT revival). It has forever remained one of my all-time favorite shows. That original production was simply enchanting. I can't think of another word that better describes it than that.

I also watched all of the bonus features on EVERY LITTLE STEP. Again, some interesting stuff, but those interviews could have been three times the length, and I wouldn't have minded.

Then I put in SALLY, one of the early talkie musicals recently released in the Warner Archives. Typical quality for a 1929 movie that hadn't been touched in terms of cleaning up or processing the sound. Still, it really showcased Marilyn Miller's dancing. She got to do all different types of dancing to really display what she could do to the entire country. No wonder the movie was such a big hit in its day.

Once "Wild Rose" started, I was terrified that the three minutes of Technicolor footage that had been found had not been inserted into this copy of the movie, but it finally kicked in, so at least now I have the same SALLY that's been broadcast on TCM a few times in the last twenty years.

Now if the Warner Archives would only release THE DESERT SONG (1929) and GOOD NEWS (1930). It would make me very happy to add those to my collection.

Tomorrow, I'll either put on RIO RITA or THE HOLLYWOOD REVUE OF 1929. If the prints are as acceptable as the recorded-off-TCM DVDs that I already have, I can replace them in the collection.
