LATIMES

(Home Theatre of MattH)

Quote
Theater chain puts a luxe twist on dinner and a movie

As they relaxed in the dimly lighted lounge, awaiting the sold-out screening of "Invictus," Stephen Galloway and his wife, Tina, were perusing the menu between sips of champagne. A waiter had just brought a chilled $49 bottle of Schramsberg sparkling wine and was ready for their order.

Tina was contemplating the $14 plate of fried calamari with ginger and lemon, while Stephen had a hankering for the $19 New York strip steak sandwich.

The Galloways are hardly high rollers -- he's a property manager and she's a social worker. Still, the Pasadena couple were more than willing to fork over $29 each for a movie ticket, on top of the bill for champagne and finger food.

Through a $200-million joint venture with Norman Lear's Act III Communications and other partners, Village Roadshow plans to open as many as 30 luxury theaters nationwide over the next five years. Future locations include Austin, Texas, and Scottsdale, Ariz.,
...

Neat - Scottsdale for Kerry and Laura, Austin for Druxy.

der Brucer

Note to Laura - please take a picture of your $29 ticket stub

Ha!

They already have a joint like this here in Austin, and I refuse to see a movie there.

When I go to a movie, I want to SEE A MOVIE, not deal with full course meals and waiters who present the check 45 minutes before the end of the picture.

Good Morning!

Well, the federal government is closed today (in Washington, DC) because of the snow, so my vacation has started a little early.  I'm off now until the 30th.

I guess I should have dug my car out yesterday--the TV weather guy says that the melted snow from yesterday has frozen and it will be much  harder to shovel today.   But it is supposed to get into the mid to upper thirties so maybe there will be a little more melting.

I ventured out to Panera yesterday.  Also Rite Aid to get some photos of my NY trip printed.

TOD:  I think the only movie I saw at a movie theatre this year was Slumdog Millionaire.

Just finished a wonderful breakfast of grits, eggs, country sausage, biscuits and hot coffee.

In about 30 minutes, we're off on our annual trek to Spartanburg SC to place wreaths on the graves of relatives.

And, of course, we'll visit with our cousin Dot and have our "obligatory" meal at Wade's in Spartanburg.   YUM!

I can't find the post asking me - BUT yes, I did read the Ayn Rand biography and enjoyed it very much.  Also sent a copy to my sister for Christmas....the idea of which I am sure would please Ms Rand.

Not too much new information - if you have read the books by the Brandens - but a lot of info on Ayn's childhood and first years in the U.S.  There is much mention of her friend Marcella who she met while working at RKO, but no further notice that said Marcella married Mark Rabwin.  Marcella was a close friend of Lucille Ball and Judy Garland, since Mark was their doctor.

Thanks! I'm the one who asked.  Think I may get it. I started reading her books in high school and I don't think I've ever read a biography

Monday morning greetings!  The view outside my window today gives meaning to "In the Bleak Midwinter."  It's not snowing or anything, but is sure is gloomy.  Today I need to finish up wrapping, get a couple of things in the mail (watch out, DR Elmore!) and get my cooking/baking act together for the week.

I forgot the post office opens at 8, not 9 am, so I had a little bit of a wait. I did learn that as of today the US Postal Service is not guaranteeing fast service for Priority Mazil, so my three packages may be a day or two later than I would really like but I am optimistic. I also believe any time between Dec 25 and Epiphany is good for me. Thank God for those 12 days of Christmas.

Heading back to be sounds like a great idea, even if there is no snow here in San Antonio. It's still too cold. Frost on the ground. Everything dead looking. Still, it's nicer than the mess inside the house, which I have to clean up today. This is one of those days when I wish I had the cleaning twitch Samantha had on "Bewitched."
And what that has to do with the best performances of the year, I don't know. And I don't really care.

If Washington (Gen) had been reluctant to venture forth in stormy weather, we'd have no Washington (DC).

Good morning!

Very cold morning (25 or thereabout), but my walk felt good and invigorating, and getting back in a warm house felt wonderful. Another beautiful, cold December day here. Perfect December weather actually.

Nothing yet from UPS, but those Fox discs may come in the afternoon delivery. If not, it'll be 8 1/2 on Blu-ray when I get in from lunch. I just plan to do the movie only. I'll save the commentary and the bonuses for other days. SInce it doesn't come out until January 12th, I can spend a lavish amount of time on it.
