And speaking of food...
Steve and I decided to give
Lucille's Southern Cuisine a try for dinner. It was pretty good: ribs, fried catfish, pork loin sandwich, collards, green beans, mac'n'cheese, corn bread, etc. Steve and I both opted for the
un-sweet tea after all the holiday treats of the past couple of days, however, we ended up getting enough "sweet" in their collards, green beans and cornbread. The sugar actually worked with the green beans and collards - it tasted liked they had simmered both veggies with bits of glazed ham, there was definitely a brown sugar finish to them. The cornbread was good too, but it was definitely made with finely ground corn meal. It was more cake-like rather than quick-bread-like. Steve commented that if they had served it with frosting, he still would have liked it.

*Lucille's took over a building that used to house one of Richmond's restaurant landmarks, The Celebrity Room. It was one of those friendly neighborhood places that served more than one neighborhood - it probably seats at least 300 comfortably. The Celebrity Room had closed back in 2007(?) and had attempted to reopen in 2008, and then was turned into a Mediterranean restaurant earlier this year. That venture closed down a few months later. Lucille's had a pretty good crowd tonight, and I hope they're able to stick around for a while. I think the fact that they are one of the few restaurants in this part of town serving traditional Southern fare should work in their favor.
