Regarding my comments about Michael Gruber last night:  As I said I thought he sang well and danced well, but he just seemed devoid of emotion in his performance.  I have tried to take into account that he was doing two shows yesterday, but it didn't seem to affect anyone else's performance.  There is certainly no question that he is talented, although I am not too sure about the sexy part.  He did strip down to his boxers and a t-shirt, but I don't remember my heart racing at all.

I made it through my one day of Christmas shopping and then to my mom's on Christmas. It was the smallest Christmas ever...just 5 of us. I cooked brunch and brought it but my brother didn't make it there until after 5! We left around nine and then I had to come home and stay up very late to do all the work on the film I needed to do. Best laid plans...

Day after Christmas---3 hours of conference calls before escaping to Greg's parents, and then home for more film work.

Today I was supposed to go to my Dad's up in the mountains, but Greg got booked to fly to Indiana (brrrr...) and couldn't go, and I didn't think I should, since I'm still sick and my father is rather frail. So this was the first Christmas I haven't spent with my dad. :-(

On the plus side, my best friend stopped by on her drive back from Ohio and I took her out for dinner and we had a fine time drinking sake and catching up and eating sushi. The woman next to us apologized to the waitress for "not knowing Chinese"....

BK, make sure you ask the car dealer for the Car Facts, before you buy the car.

Yes, he has all that stuff.  He has everything from the day the car was first sold, including all the original factory price stickers.

DR Jane - My mom has a "card" because of her heart valve, and it actually helps her get through the security screening faster.  She presents it right at the initial ID check, and they pull her aside right there - usually bypassing the "regular" lines.  -Get the card.

does your father get to go with her?  i didn't realize a heart valve would be an issue.

It's a metal - titanium, I think - heart valve.  My father still had/has to go through the regular line.

There is a great little bit in "Up in the Air" about airport security lines. -it's funny because it's true. ;)

jennifer the card is to explain there is metal, or whatever the artificial parts inside of us are made of, will set off the security alarm.  i still have trouble believing i have a partial artificial shoulder, or that the accident really happened.

And speaking of food...

Steve and I decided to give Lucille's Southern Cuisine a try for dinner.  It was pretty good: ribs, fried catfish, pork loin sandwich, collards, green beans, mac'n'cheese, corn bread, etc.  Steve and I both opted for the un-sweet tea after all the holiday treats of the past couple of days, however, we ended up getting enough "sweet" in their collards, green beans and cornbread.  The sugar actually worked with the green beans and collards - it tasted liked they had simmered both veggies with bits of glazed ham, there was definitely a brown sugar finish to them.  The cornbread was good too, but it was definitely made with finely ground corn meal. It was more cake-like rather than quick-bread-like.  Steve commented that if they had served it with frosting, he still would have liked it. ;)

*Lucille's took over a building that used to house one of Richmond's restaurant landmarks, The Celebrity Room.  It was one of those friendly neighborhood places that served more than one neighborhood - it probably seats at least 300 comfortably.  The Celebrity Room had closed back in 2007(?) and had attempted to reopen in 2008, and then was turned into a Mediterranean restaurant earlier this year.  That venture closed down a few months later.  Lucille's had a pretty good crowd tonight, and I hope they're able to stick around for a while.  I think the fact that they are one of the few restaurants in this part of town serving traditional Southern fare should work in their favor.

And as for those new flying restrictions...

Most of them apply to flights coming into the US.  However, there have apparently been some "random" new rules set up for domestic routes.  Anyhoo...

Some of the new rules - implemented and suggested - really do seem, well... stupid.  "Nothing on your lap for the last 30 minutes of the flight."  Really?!?!?

I took a lovely box of Godiva chocolates to my mother's house, and they were shared with the family. Thanks to Elmore for making our Christmas sweet!

Channel 13 is showing a wonderful new film version of LA BOHEME with Anna Nebtrebko at the moment. It's a really beautiful production.

I recorded it a couple of days ago.  I think I'm going to make a DVD of it, but I have to clear things off my DVD burner first.

When I go back down, I'll watch REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and maybe have time for A STUDY IN TERROR, the Sherlock Holmes film made in 1965 that I've only previously seen once. Can't wait to see it again.

I love Robert Morley as Mycroft Holmes in A STUDY IN TERROR!

I didn't get to it tonight, but I will look forward to seeing it tomorrow.

Have any DRs checked out Glyde.com yet?  It seems to be a rather easy way to sell and buy used CDs, DVDs, books and games.  From what I can tell they've set themselves up as the middle-man.

When I bought my Honda many years ago I brought a friend with me to help with negotiations. Said friend is quite a hard bargainer. However, he just sat there, reading a magazine--he gets VERY engrossed--while I did all the negotiating! Pooh! But it taught me to do the negotiating myself. As it happened, my first choice was for the grey model, but they didn't have any on the lot. They did have navy blue, however, which was my second choice. They really, really wanted to sell it. I kept saying, "But I really like the grey one." I was persistent and saved IIRC $1500 by buying the blue one. The two cars were identical otherwise.

My mom was also able to get the price lowered on a car because they didn't have the color that she wanted.

Then I watched 8 1/2 on Blu-ray. The image is pretty astonishing with only one black scratch and one small transition where things went a little weird image-wise. I hadn't watched my DVD in quite some time, but this will definitely take its place.

DR Matt H -- you're post inspired me to dig out my DVD of 8 1/2 and watch it again, this time with the commentary turned on.  Most  interesting.  It adds so much to the appreciation of the film -- really assists in understanding the images, symbolism, and foreshadowing in a way I've never really seen or understood before.  So thank you!

You're welcome. I only listened to about 45 minutes of the commentary to get a feel for its content, but I will definitely go back at some point this week and listen to the entire thing.

After I finished my household chores tonight, I settled back down to watch REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. Interesting tale but quite irritating in the swings the story took (and I always despise the overuse of repeating the names of the person you're addressing over and over and over in the same scene and from scene to scene. It's REALLY bad in this movie.)

Good performances, but I wouldn't have given Kate WInslet the Golden Globe for her work over Meryl Streep in DOUBT.

I didn't have enough time for A STUDY IN TERROR tonight, so I watched last night's CASTLE episode. It was the one with the Nikki Heat launch party and Castle being offered a contract to write three James Bond novels. The mystery was pretty good, too, even though it was a plot I've seen used in LAW & ORDER before.

Where did you find the new rules, Jose? I looked on the TSA site and didn't see anything new.

Most of them have appeared in various newspaper articles.  -They are not appearing on the TSA website because:
A) The new rules are mainly being implemented by foreign, non-US airports, so they're not directly under the TSA rulings.
B) The new TSA-implemented rules for domestic flights are still being labeled as "layered" and "random" which basically means they're still playing it by ear.  Nothing is in stone, and I'm guessing the "layers" of security are different from airport to airport.

There is this "statement" from the TSA:

TSA Guidance for Passengers on Heightened Security Measures in Place Following Dec. 25 Incident

However, this just popped up on the web:

JetBlue Pilot's Agonized Announcement: The TSA's Draconian Reactionary Rules

*I wonder how long it will take for the TSA to reprimand that pilot. :-\

So, depending on what comes in the mail tomorrow, I'll be working on the remaining bonus features on 8 1/2 tomorrow afternoon. I am expecting two Blu-rays from Fox this week: JENNIFER'S BODY and THE MARINE 2. Neither sounds like a prize package movie, but I'll reserve judgment until I see them.

Oh, I'm supposed to the GLEE box set this week, too, but since it's a DVD set and not Blu-ray, I'm not sure I'll actually get it. It was requested; that's all we can do.
