Old news:  Baby, it's cold outside.
Dixie Bell and I walked the front yard, well, she ran, I walked quickly to keep up with her.  She did one round through the front, two rounds through the side then ran up the driveway to the back door.  Even a husky knows it's cold outside.

New news:  last night I watched a motion picture on blu-ray (courtesy of Netflix) entitled THE BROTHERS BLOOM.  Even though I am not a fan of Adrien Brody, I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky little movie.  I thought, from reading the synopsis, that it would be quite a lot like DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, but it's not.  It's a rather subdued comedy, with a really interesting screenplay and a very fine performance from Rachel Weisz as well as a stunning cameo from Maximilian Schell.  I recommend it.

It was 15 here this morning. For the South, that is VERY cold indeed.

I'm going to write for a little bit, and then head downstairs to start thinking about what's for lunch. I, too, will be handling laundry duties later this afternoon.

It is the last day -- SOB! -- of my vacation which began Dec. 9.

Just the thought of going back makes me want to extend the whole thing by one week!

Happily, I have more than enough vacation time to do such a thing.

Unhappily, it would be unconscionable to ask for, much less expect, such an extension.

Perhaps I can take Friday off instead....hmmmmmm!

Bruce:  VERY intrigued...and agape...about the "new" Kritzerland CD about which you teased us this morning.

What could it be?

Last night, I watched "Kings of the Sun" on my DVR.

What a very odd film.

Yul Brynner is magnificent, as usual.

George Chakiris, however, is a mess, IMO.  And that HAIR!  Merciful heavens.  He is a Mayan king, yet he has "Bernardo hair" to which the hair stylist affixed a little black pony tail/topnotch.

Everyone else looks relatively convincing, but Chakiris' hair "done him in" at every turn. especially during his fight scenes when the topnotch is flopping around furiously while the rest of his hair is sprayed fast to a fare-thee-well.  Ah, vanity and the notion that one's signature "do" must never be tampered with.

The score by Elmer Bernstein makes a valiant attempt to enoble/engage/endear but it was a hopeless cause, I fear.

I can say this:  The Bernstein re-recording of the score (possibly the last thing he finished before his death) in no way matches the original recording in pacing or excitement.  It makes me wonder if this soundtrack score is something BK might someday stumble across and take a chance upon.

I pondered, briefly, making this a laundry day.

I decided, though, I'd rather go to CostCo.

Golly!  I appear to be the only member online at the moment.  And there are zero guests to taunt.

I brushed my teeth,  so I know it isnt' bad breath.

This movie has always been a guilty pleasure of mine ever since I first saw it in the theatre.  A lot of it is wonderfully silly; but, as you say, Yul Brynner comes off pretty good.

In a few minutes, wife Sandy and I will be departing for Green Pastures to indulge in the world's greatest Sunday Brunch.

This unbelievable restaurant in Austin occupies what was once the estate of John Henry Faulk and his family.

Faulk, as you may know, was a TV personality, blacklisted during the McCarthy era and defended by attorney Louis Nizer.  The story of his case was told in a book & TV movie, FEAR ON TRIAL.  George C. Scott was Nizer & William Devane was Faulk.

We were introduced to this place the first time we visited Austin, back in June of 2008.  It's very pricey (but worth it). so we've only been back there once since.

However, since they were closed on the 1st (my wife's birthday), this will be a belated birthday treat.

 :)

Free-for-all Day

I know we have had this as a topic of the day before, but since BK brought it up;  What is everyone's favorite Stephen King film adaptation?

I think my choice would have to be THE STAND.  It is a miniseries, rather than a film, but I think it is the perfect length to cover that huge and complicated story.

My favorite King adaptation is The Dead Zone, which, save for one scene, I find superb.  Remove the one scene and it would ALL be superb.  I also really like Carrie.  The Shining is a film I now like very much, but it's really not a good adaptation of the novel.

I've talked about the scene ad nauseum - it's the scene with Martin Sheen and his henchman where they threaten the newspaper man.  It gives away the fact that Sheen is a creep way too demonstrably - without that scene, you don't know for sure and that's much better.

No, I just meant that every time I talk about my love for the film, I mention the scene in question.  Same with a scene in The Boy Who Could Fly, which I think hurts that film.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And I slept in until Noon.  Well, actually, I got up some time around 10:00 or 10:30, and then listened to WCVE until my Mom called me down for breakfast/brunch/lunch.  ;)
