Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And as much as I like Lincoln Center's "20 for 20" promotion, it was really nice to sleep in today.

The short versions...

I liked last night performance of Turandot at The Met.  The Zeffirelli production still manages to impress and overwhelm, but it works its magic.

The soprano, well... However, Salvatore Licitra, unlike on opening night, did not crack last night.  Whew!  -In fact, he sounded in very good voice last night.  Alas, he certainly does not sound as good and healthy as he did when he made his debut a couple of years ago.

After the opera - which did not get out until close to midnight - I ended up heading back over to Casellula for some post-Puccini nourishment. My friend, Brendan, had just gotten back from an event at the UN, so he ended up joining me.  A couple of appetizers and a slice of their amazing chocolate cake and some great conversation... We ended up staying until closing... 2:00...

For those of you interested in helping raise funds for Haitian relief:

I have a mobile phone registered with Virgin - I need to pay $20 every three months to keep the phone active. I never come close to using all my minutes, so the money rolls over from month to month (I think there is nearly $200 in the account).

I have never texted! (I have sent text to an Email account).

The TV ads say "TEXT HAITI to 90999" to contribute $10 to ARC.

Will that work regardless of what phone service I use?

Are there other helpful suggestions/numbers?

I'm not a big Red Cross Fan, and the YELE site is getting bad press, but I guess giving some of the surplus to ARC is better than taking it to my grave.

Thanx

Can one of our NYC denizens clarify something for me, if you know?  At my gig last night, the bassist was telling me about a MOMA exhibit he went to last year on Abstract Expressionism.  He said one main portion of it was a 19th century guy with progressive mental disease and the exhibit showed a progression from beautiful still lifes to horrible nightmare scenes.  What got me confused is the bassist said this same artist also had images of electroshock therapy and that he was lobotomized.  Obviously either the timeline is off or the bassist is confused about (perhaps) two different artists.  Did any of you see it?  Do you have any idea whom he's referencing?

DR Jose might know. Did you check the MOMA site? There might be a contact page for questions on previous exhibits.

Hmmm...

The first exhibit/artist that came to my mind was the James Ensor which did include some rather "interesting" subject matter.

However, I don't recall an Abstract Expressionism exhibit at MoMA last year, nor in 2008.  There were a couple of photography mini-exhibitions, and I do seem to remember a couple of more disturbing images from there, but...

Maybe he was thinking of one of the exhibitions at the Guggenheim?

It should.  And, if it turns out that you can't make a donation via text, you will get a bounce-back message saying so. In other words, it can't hurt to try.

*Now, does the "money" roll over? or just the "minutes"?  I suspect it may just be the minutes.  Call your carrier.

**And if it is the "money" that rolls over, I have a feeling that that money is designated for your account, not as additional charge/donation.

Definitely "money" - whne I ask for a current balance it's quoted as dollars - not minutes; I have no "minutes" allocation, I just get charged for the minutes I use.

Calling is probably a good idea.

I'm up and printing pages, after which I'll go Xerox and the deliver.

bk - Have you thought of investing in a personal laser copier for your home environs?  It may be more cost-effective for you in the short-long-run.  -And you could hook it up to your Mac too.

And now...

My roommate, Megan, is hosting a game night here at the apartment tonight, and since she still hasn't taken down her Christmas decorations... And since I still need to take care of some tidying up myself... Well...

Laters...

It is very difficult to know what organization to give my donation to for the earthquake relief in Haiti.  I think I will donate to World Vision, bascially because they are headquarted here locally.  I also know that they already had staff working in Haiti before the quake.

I really don't do that much copying, and I usually never go to Staples anymore because they have no more script rate fee and I hate them.  However, they're one minute from my house so for these really short runs it makes sense to do them there.  However, anytime I need a full run or scripts or anything, I go to Office Depot where a former dear reader works and where I do get a script rate and usually have discount coupons.

I printed, I Xeroxed, I delivered.  I went and had a little breakfast - I decided to switch it up and ordered lox, eggs, and onions, but the lox was so disgustingly pungent and strong, I couldn't eat it - I ended up with my bacon and eggs.

Kathleen Sebelius also mentioned calling that number on Colbert:

according to snopes http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/haiti.asp texting will make a donation, no mention of a special phone carrier.  also mentioned is small false info floating around

I don't donate to The Red Cross but I will be donating through Turner, which is matching donations for employees.
