Today's Duo Recital at Weill Recital Hall featured mezzo-soprano, Sashe Cooke, and baritone, Kelly Markgraf - who happen to be newlyweds - and the indispensable Steven Blier at the piano.  The first part of the program consisted of songs based on the texts from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" - a classic, if not the classic collection of German folk poetry, and the second part featured songs by Kurt Weill and Jerome Kern. -With a great Harold Arlen/Ira Gershwin song as an encore, "A New Day".

One of the Weill songs sung by Sasha Cooke was "Wie lange noch?" ("How much longer?") which is a re-working of Weill's own "Je ne t'aime pas".  The new lyric provided by Walter Mehring describes a women and her lover, however, it's clearly a representation of Germany and Hitler.  -Both Weill and Mehring were banned by the Third Reich and fled from Germany to America.  What a truly powerful song.

Program Note #1:

I guess it has been a while since I've seen Steven Blier perform, or seen him in person - When he made his entrance from backstage on a motorized cart, it caught me off guard a bit.  I had also noticed beforehand that the piano seat was set a pretty high level, and had thought it was some sort of mistake, but... Then I vaguely remembered and reminded myself that he's been dealing with muscular dystrophy over the past couple of years.  Thankfully, his interpretive skills - which have always had a humorous edge to them - were still in evidence, and his banter between songs was as informative and enlightening as ever.

Program Note #3:

Once again, Marilyn Horne introduced the artists for today's recital.  After telling some personal anecdotes about Sasha and Kellly, she noted that the one Strauss song listed in the program had been cut... And then she proceeded to sing a bit of it a cappella as she walked off the stage to take her seat in the audience... :)

Had a great conversation with DR JHVW today.  He has moved out of the house and started back to college yesterday.   It's been a long road to get back to where he is now and I'm so proud of him.  He sounds very excited about school and getting out of the house. He said he'd stop back here to say hello.  Hope he does

Great news about DR JHVW!!

And.... The police just stopped by the building... Apparently someone or ones were running across the roof of the building. The upstairs tenants thought someone was trying to break in...

And now I'm wide awake...

Oh, and my hosts loved the cookies from there, but since she is pregnant, they only had one cookie each before she sent them off with John to work. At work, people sampled them, and said "These are evil...get them out of here." And promptly had more.

;D

*And I guess you saw my post about Levain now accepting credit cards?  ;)

OK, in the small world department - have any of you in the music field ever worked with a French horn player named Russ (or Russell) Rizner?  Through Facebook I've been connecting with Detroit school friends and found out that he's worked on a lot of Broadway shows and Broadway and classical recordings.  He was slightly behind me all through elementary and junior high.

I've met Russ a few times.  He plays in the pit at the New Amsterdam for Mary Poppins.  Here's his IBDB listing.

Cilla, I hadn't thought of that one.

But with PROMISES PROMISES coming up, I had toodled around with one to "I'll Never fall in Love Again":

What do you get when you skip the polls?
A guy with a staple through his tummy
That’s what you get you stupid dummy
I'll never skip the polls again
I'll never skip the polls again

What do you get when you stay at home?
A guy with a past who’s still a hottie
Just what we need, a naked Scottie
I'll never skip the polls again
I'll never skip the polls again

Don't tell me ‘bout your strep and gout
'Cause if you cared you’d’ve stepped on out
Now you’ll have health plans that restrict you
That is why I’d like to have kicked you

Out of your house when your lazy ass
Sat on the couch getting soft and mushy
Go get inspired by Scott Brown’s tushy
I'll never skip the polls again
I'll never skip the polls again

(Don’t tell me we were just outclassed
We know he won’t cover up his past)
Right into that legislative body
Let us hope he won’t be too shoddy

What can’t you get when you do not vote?
You can’t get the flu, so watch the weather
You’re outta luck, now all-together
I'll never skip the polls again
I'll never skip the polls again

Well, that's a rough pass at it anyway,
