I'm just reading DRs Jane and MattH's comments about the ladies short program.

RE: scott hamilton being near tears during Joannie Rochette's short program (her mother went to vancouver to watch her and died unexpectedly of a heart attack a few days ago).

I don't know if NBC showed brian orser (canadian olympian and now yu-na kim's coach). He was crying too.  And the canadian announcers didn't speak at all either. AFterwards Elizabeth Manley (who is one of the commentators on CTV) said she wasn't talking because her and the other announcer were crying.

I was actually so proud that Joannie skated as well as she did.  It seems the women fall much less than the men (is that due to them not doing the extremely difficult jumps?).

I really hope she has a clean skate tonight.

I believe I have figured out what the vaunted final shot of LOST is going to be department:

(SPOILER and/or POLITICALLY INCORRECT JOKE SPACE)

The camera pulls back to reveal the entire show has been occurring in the mind of an autistic boy watching a Gilligan's Island marathon on cable.

BK, hopefully you saw how easy amputating an extra leg can be.

Another comment re: the women's skating. I did really enjoy yu-na kim. And the crowd loves her (not sure if it's mostly cause she trains in canada). But watching felt like i was watching little kids. They all seemed so young. I know the top 2 are 19.  The top american looked way younger (and since they said she had to do her schoolwork i'm guessing she is 16-17).

I'm gently prodding Grant to get rid of the leg - as always, he didn't want to because he thinks it's funny.  We'll get there.

Good morning!

The return of cold weather. It was 27 this morning, so I had to bundle up for my walk. Beautiful day, however, even if it's not going to get out of the high 30s.

New Survivor on tv tonight. I'll have to juggle that and the ladies long program. Although i'm guessing the good skaters won't be on until at least 10pm or 11pm!  Oh and the Idol results at 8pm too.

Yes, the final skate tonight should be a good one and a memorable one with so many stories in the background to make it more than just about who gets the gold. As usual, I'll be recording and then watching it tomorrow. If it's anything like the men's final, I'll be asleep before the final skater even takes the ice.

PONYO on Blu-ray arrived a little bit ago, so this will be my work project for the day. YOJIMBO will have to wait for tomorrow (or later if those TV box sets come in.)

Yes, there is a smattering of new episodes tonight. THE DEEP END has its finale episode. SURVIVOR is on with a new episode. IDOL results and KITCHEN NIGHTMARES are there.

And, of course, there are new episodes of BURN NOTICE and, I assume, PROJECT RUNWAY (though I didn't check on it).

TOD:

Stage:

A CHORUS LINE

THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG (which has a wonderful score and is a fun show to see. I saw the national tour when it came through here decades ago. We didn't get Lorna Luft, though. I'd have to check to see who played it here.)

[I do not like the score to THE GOODBYE GIRL.]

Film:

Really love his score for THE WAY WE WERE and his adaptation of THE STING works wonderfully.

Love the Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better." It's one of the best of the Bond themes.

Since I won't be having lunch out today, I'll be watching last night's PSYCH while I eat lunch. And that will clear off my cache again on the DVR. Nice having all that space, and if I had had more days off, I was going to get the TOnys transferred so I could get that off there, too.

My favorite Hamlisch film score is his first - The Swimmer.  My favorite Hamlisch score for the stage, based only on the recording I have, is Smile.  Favorite Hamlisch song is Looking Through The Eyes Of Love from Ice Castles.

Greetings from Toyland! It's snowing quite nicely and looking very pretty. I've run my errands and working on material composed by Mr Victor Herbert in 1912.

I'm going to finish up a few items in the office, and then I'll head downstairs and maybe watch some SUPERMAN episodes before I start thinking about what's for lunch.

I really like Hamlisch's score for the West End floperoo JEAN SEBERG.  BK's close personal acquaintance Brian (?) from A1 Record Finders on Melrose gave me a copy years ago when I spent lots (as in LOTS) of moolah getting old, rare OCR's, long before we ever started seeing them on CD.

As I mentioned, I was gobsmacked to see Hamlisch co-wrote SUNSHINE, LOLLIPOPS AND RAINBOWS, so I'll include that.  But I also have a soft spot for a little known Hamlisch piece (Babs recorded it) called THE BEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE.  I sang that at my very first audition for a musical when I was a kid and got one of the featured parts in the show for which I was trying out.

Grant writing is major tedious - but, apparently, LUCRATIVE!!! Been doin' some work for a biotech company which has made a Change The World Healthcare advance.  Wow -
And slogging through grant ap's for the theater I work for... sheesh.... Know the phrase, "A Dollar Short and a Day Late???" Yep... <sigh>

On a deliriously 'appy note, I've put a lovely little garden on the balcony of the apartment I'm staying in, here at gawjus Marina del Rey. I do love a garden!

I had forgotten about "The Swimmer." Great music for a sadly underappreciated film.

As for the Topic of the Day...

A Chorus Line - Some of my favorite moments are the bits of underscore - which I've always wondered if they were pulled from his "trunk".  -Pardon that convoluted grammar.
They're Playing Our Song - "Fallin'" still gives me the warm-fuzzies.
Smile - Alas, I've heard "Disneyland" butchered at many an audition, so...
The Goodbye Girl - "No More", "My Rules" (which is just fun to play), "How Can I Win?"
