LORD OF THE TRANSFERS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written quickly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently raving over the transfer of Lord Of The Rings.

Good morning, all!  I am very pissed over last night's noise from the pig above me between midnight and 2 am last night, especially since I went to bed at 11, knowing i had to be up for the McGlinnventory at 6:30. I have no idea how much sleep I got last night and I susopect that by 3 pm I will be comatose. So, I wil shortly be off to Park Avenue and 23rd Street for today's McGlinnventory. After that, I have a stop at Toyland before I head back uptown.

DR Jose, the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ bears as much relationship to the Baum book as I do. Julian Mitchell and his producer Fred Hamlin ran all over Baum and Paul Tietjen's comic opera proposal and brought in a ton of Broadway writers to redo the score. Most of the numbers have absolutley nothing with the plot and provide every excuse for one of the cast to have a star turn in front of an audience. The original production had a lot of numbers and by the time it went into the Witmark Music Library, a lot of interpolations had replaced things. My friend Joseph Rubin has about 30 cut songs and there are another 22 songs now lost.

In answer to DR Jose's comment last night --

"DR MattH - Good to read that you got your cable box issues worked out.  And I'm ever more amazed that you were able to get a service technician to come out the same day!?!?!"

I think I must have gotten bumped up to the top of the list because I had already made a run to one of the Time-Warner locations to swap out the box and they knew I had been without cable for more than 24 hours at that point. As I've said many times in the past, while I understand others have trouble with their cable providers, I've never gotten anyting but top quality service from Time-Warner in Charlotte.

What's more, I was told to expect the technician between 1-3 p.m. He got here at 12:40! By 1 p.m. he was gone, and I could carry on with my work project yesterday.

My problem with LOTR: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS was that I'd never read the books.

So, watching the theatrical release, I was a bit confused  for the first half hour or so, because I didn't really understand who the hell these characters were and what kind of world they were in.  [I'm not big on fantasy worlds anyway.]

I later saw the extended version which, for me, made everything much more clear.

I don't usually like extended versions because they, almost always, reinstate footage that was best left on the cutting room floor (e.g. RIDE WITH THE DEVIL, the 2nd two LOTR movies).  This first film in the trilogy is an exception.

In your column today, BK, you rightly state that tunes are our friends. I know you have many friends in the tune world, but what are a few of your favorites? Any that you have not recorded that you want to?

I am hoping the BRAIN cast is studying their lines and lyrics.  Fred went up on Sunday on his first song and The Brain lost a few lyrics as well.....

I unfortunately will not be able to journey to Olympia as I have gigs all that weekend.  If a certain piece of paper were to come back to me fairly soon, I might be able to talk about another opportunity for a NW HHW get-together.  Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say n'more.  ;)

Good morning!

Chillier this moring than I was expecting, and I should have put a sweatshirt on over my t-shirt. Still, the walk was great, and I was pleased that I was n't exhausted at all from it after skipping it yesterday since I mowed the grass. It's not getting out of the 60s today, a change from the 80 we've had the last two days.

As I mentioned last night, I'll be working on the I LOVE LUCY movie today. There are a fair number of other bonus rareties on the disc, so this looks to take up much of the afternoon.

I do know that if I have time tonight (and I should have plenty of time), I plan to look at Al Jolson's 1930 movie MAMMY from Warner Archives today. This is that rare Warner Archive disc that's coming from a restored and remastered source, so I'll be interested to see what kind of quality it has.

I'm heading downstairs now to catch up with last night's Elvis-themed edition of AMERICAN IDOL with mentor Adam Lambert.

Then I'll start on lunch. I'll have to fish something out of the archives to watch while I eat. By watching GLEE last night, I've exhausted any potential DVRed programming already.

I think that it's great that MAMMY and other movies are being preserved and made available for people who want to see them.

However, let's not kid ourselves. Except for Jolson's singing, this is a boring movie. The script just limps along, and even Michael Curtiz' direction can't save it.

There are classic films and there are curios. MAMMY is definitely a curio.

DR CP - you and MR BK have comped tickets - the rest of us have to pay.

The tickets are reserved, but the seats are not it's a free for all once you get inside....but I think the five of us can be seated together without problems.
