Dear Friend BK, I hope the book fair this weekend is a great success for you and that many innocent bibliophiles are seduced by the humor, nostalgia, angst, joy and humanity of Benjamin Kritzer.

I am currently watching/listening to DR Nick Redman's quite excellent commentary on The Inn of the Sixth Happiness.  I tried booking that place through Expedia, but they only had openings at the Fifth and Seventh Happinesses.

I agree.  It's harder to get into than Cloud Nine.

CD player in the car:

--A collection of short works for organ recorded at the (outdoor) Spreckel's Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park in San Diego.  They put on concerts there every Sunday at 2:00 pm and I attended the one last Sunday while I was in town.   It's quite an unusual experience--and a rather enjoyable one, too.

--OBCR of Wicked

--Brahms Symphony #4, with the Cleveland Symphony conducted by Maestro George Szell

--OBCR of Avenue Q

--A collection of Negro Spirituals sung by Mr. Paul Robeson

Bruce, Dahlink, Sweetheart, Cupcake:

Lots of luck to you tomorrow and Sunday at the UCLA Bookfest.  I hope you sell lots of books, recruit minions of clever and erudite newbies to HHW.com and, most of all, have lots of fun!

DR Jay:  If you are a Brahms 4 fan, you must get (if you don't already have) the old Bruno Walter/Columbia Symphony version from around 1960, out on CD, too.  As an interesting comparison, the Mackerras/Scottish Chamber version is a smaller-contingent version ("in the style of the original Meininger performances") that rates a listen or two.

Actually, Dear Reader JMK, I do have that Brahms 4 with Walter, on vinyl and yes, it is a thrilling performance.  I just received the Szell recording by way of clearing some merchandise points I had earned on a credit card I no longer use.  Haven't listened to it yet.

Comparing the magnificent Mr Mackerras with another great, he gives Maestro Szell a run for his money in his Supraphon recording of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, and I thought Szell was definitive.

Ya know, it's only at HHW.com that I'm able to participate in conversations like these.  Pity we can't play "Drop the Needle" here.

Lest you Dear Readers out there in the dark think "Drop the Needle" is a druggie reference, please be enlightened.

If you've ever seen the first act of The Lisbon Traviata, you know how "Drop the Needle" is played.

"Drop the Needle" is a favorite pastime--though its technology is somewhat dated--of opera queens everywhere.  It's sort of a party game, where the host places an opera recording on the turntable, drops the tonearm (and its needle) somewhere in the middle of some aria/duet/trio/quartet/quintet/sextet/scena/etc./etc./etc. and his (and it's always his) guests have to guess, as appropriate to the piece being played, the composer, opera, singers, and date and location of the recording.

BK, I will be putting in an appearance by your stall tomorrow, even though you don't have Kritzer Time bookmarks to goo with Benjamin Kritzer and Kritzerland bookmarks I already have...unless, of course, your publisher has rectified this glaring oversight...

Noel coward appreciation years

Ah, how well I remember those years of appreciating cowards - Woody Allen, Col. Klinger, etc.  Not sure how that era got named after me, though.   ::)

Larry (or Mr. Elmore, or LE or DR Elmore). To do the dance, you click on reply to get to the message box. When all your smilie icons have loaded (they are above the message box) choose the ones you want to use in your page dance. Just click on them and they will appear in the message field. Once you have chosen the smilies you like, highlight them and then click the button with the arrow and the M (it's above the Add YABBC tags bar). This will add the code necessary to make your smilies dance.
