DR Jane: Scottish shortbread is popular here - particularly at Christmas. I still prefer the homemade variety.

Further to your early question: Colin and I visit our friends Lisa & Darren for Breakfast each Anzac Day. I have just returned home (5 hours at the breakfast table!). Our friends have visited and stayed with our friends in Northen France who celebrate Anzac day too.

I guess I should recommend the Oz film Gallipoli for your viewing. A young American actor - Mr Gibson - was the star. I have not been to Anzac cove but know a few people who have made the journey. There is quite a strong friendship between the  Turkish people and Australians despite the fact that we fought each other in The Great War. A mutual respect for the bravery, and sacrifice has brought us close together. The Turkish soldiers are now represented in Anzac day marches here. It is just not the Australians that are remembered but all who have suffered the horrors or war.

My arm is complete. No that's not the right quote. It is truly a delight to have such a good friend posting once again at HHW.

Hi François! Nice to see you again! :)

My favorite cookies from childhood on have to be my grandma's pizzelles and biscotti. I like to dunk my biscotti in hot chocolate. It's a nice breakfast!

I also love white chocolate macadamia nut cookies from Isgro's Bakery in Philly...ooh and the chocolate ice box cookies there are wonderful! Oh no! That reminds me...I left a bag of them (and a chocolate mousse cannoli) at my uncle's in NYC. Boo to that! :(

I can't believe I forgot to tell you the best thing about Grandma's pizzelles! She makes plain ones, yes, but she also make chocolate pizzelles! Grandma takes them right out of the iron and wraps them around mini bars of Hershey's chocolate while they're still hot. They cool, and they're ready to eat! Delicious!

Welcome back, Francois.  You have been missed.

And we want to hear all sorts of cheap excuses for why you were away for so long!   ;D

Favorite cookie that I don't make myself: chocolate covered pretzels!  And I don't want that stinkin' milk chocolate, I want real pretzels covered with real dark chocolate!

(We really need to get up to the Reading Terminal Market in Philly, because they have the best!)

Two "I don't know if anyone's noticed" bits:

Garry Trudeau has broken the rules again with his comic strip Doonesbury.  For one thing, he's had a major character, BD, lose a leg in the war in Iraq.

This has been controversial enough for some papers to pull the strip this week.  Others are condemning the strip for use of foul language.  (When BD wakes and discovers what has happened, he shouts "Son of a Bitch!"  Seems appropriate to me.)  That's rule breakage number one.

We won't go into how old BD is supposed to be.  I mean, he served in Viet Nam.

The second rule broken is one of Trudeau's own.  On the strip for Wednesday, April 21st, BD is shown for the first time that I know of not wearing a helmet!  They guy has always worn either a flak helmet or a football helmet, even back when Trudeau was writing for his college newspaper.  BD has hair!

Of course, this second rule-breaking is the sort of thing that's going to slip under most everyone's radar.  Pity for most everyone.

OK, just how hot was it at the book fair?  CP looks like he could use a good breeze.

It was VERY hot.
That's what it looks like.  I hope someone supplied you with plenty of icy Diet Coke.

On the other hand, you were under a tent, so you didn't get burned to a crisp.  I mean, you look OK in a hat, but if you're sitting down, it's kind of hard to see your face from above.  All someone like me would get to see is your mouth, and that someone would miss the twinkle in your eyes.

I'm hoping you stayed cool enough to keep twinkling!   :-\

They didn't have Diet Coke - I was smart enough to bring one, and then we bought one during the day.

Whew! Caught up on all the posts. Great photos. What's the problem, FS Pogue? You've never looked lovelier. The Book Festival was long and hot - but people watching is one of my favorite sports and there was plenty of that to do. The whole thing was not terribly well organized, starting with the parking. A huge lot with absolutely no signs instructing us where to go. Which is no fun when you're lugging boxes of box around. We finally did manage to find the way out and then to locate Booth 132. I assume bk will talk about the day in detail in his Notes, so I'll leave that to him.
The Glendale book signing was interesting - it's always a fruitful experience listening to other writers reading or talking about their work. (I don't think I've ever used the word "fruitful" before - and I don't know why I used it just now - but there it is.)
By the end of that event (the end for us, anyway) bk and I were FAMISHED. We went out and had macaroni and cheese with garlic bread (bk) and fish and no chips but coleslaw instead (me) - and, oh yes,  onion rings for starters. A nice light late evening repast.
Looking forward to more people watching tomorrow.
