TOD:

Not sure how you are defining "cabaret act".  Is that different from a "nightclub act"?

If we're talking comedians, as well as singers, then I would have to say it's a toss-up between Don Rickles and Jack Carter, two of the all time greats.

Of course, seeing Jimmy Durante do his act in person was also quite a thrill.

One act that I wish I'd seen:

In the summer of 1959, I took a 2-week trip to Los Angeles (from Seattle), a present to myself for graduating high school and before starting college.  I stayed at that (once-nice/now cheesy) hotel at Hollywood and Vine.

Playing that week at the Moulin Rouge nightclub at Sunset & Vine were Sophie Tucker and Ted Lewis.

I don't recall why I didn't go see them, but I've always regretted that I didn't.

They were show business history.

I've not seen a lot of cabaret, but I've been fortunate to see Bobby Short twice and Anthony Newley once.  I also saw Charles Pierce do his drag act in Atlanta.  I was with Martha Raye at the time;  She laughed so hard, she peed herself.  I'm sure it had nothing to do with the amount of alcohol she also consumed that night.

Saturday morning greetings!  Due to the weather forecast (thunderstorms) and their early departure (9am) I opted out of a trip to Cincinnati's Krohn Conservatory with my AAUW friends today.  Instead, we just saw DS Rob off to Michigan for Mary Linda's sister's high school graduation party.  We sent along 6 pints of Graeter's ice cream packed in dry ice to add to the festivities.

I saw Newley.  He was great.

He did a show at Cal State Northridge.

Most of the cabaret acts I have seen over the years have been great. Only a few have not been to my liking.

Four people I wish I had seen do their acts: Blossom Dearie, Bobby Short, Nancy LaMott and Laurie Beachman

Some of my favorites (In ABC Order)

Karen Akers
Christine Andreas
Brent Barrett
Ann Hampton Callaway
Liz Callaway
David Campbell
Barbara Cook
Jason Graae
Debbie Gravitte
Jeff Harnar
Sam Harris
Brian Lane Green
Lee Lessack
Maureen McGovern
Faith Prince
Joan Ryan

and I would have liked to have seen Barbra Streisand and Better Middler when they were just starting .
out

And although these were not cabaret show but ones I saw on Broadway
Elaine Stritch
Lena Horne

Last night in response to my mentioning Gary Coleman's ex-wife's 911 audio, DR Laura said:
Quote
I don't think 911 calls should be released to the public. People call 911 when they are under great stress. It should not be used for entertainment purposes.

I guess I can agree with this. And I would not have searched out the call. But something I was watching played it.  I guess i didn't explain my point.  It wasn't that she was frantic or anything like that. Obviously that would be expected. If someone you love had an incident most people would be crazed with worry.

But she wasn't at all. All she kept saying was that she couldn't deal with this right now and the tone she used was so odd. I guess they were divorced but living together (?).  And the way she spoke, to me, it was like so unfeeling. It was just weird.

Or in shock, or the fact she was with Gary Coleman she is odd to begin with. ;)

I don't normally listen to 911 calls.  There are exceptions like the little boy who saved his family by locking himself in the bedroom, with his little sibling, and calling 911 while an intruder held a gun to the parents.  That was an amazing call to hear.

I think 911 calls should only be released by permission of the caller.

And as for subtitles - I believe it's MUCH easier to concentrate on the subtitles when you DON'T know the original language.  Otherwise, any "similarities" can be distracting.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Even though I know I've seen a lot more artists, the only that's coming to my head right now is:

I'm up - I slept right up until she of the Evil Eye rang the doorbell.  I pulled a muscle in my calf trying to get out of bed quickly - not bad, though, but I'll jog tomorrow instead of today.

Some acts, while they work really well in person, would not necessarily work as just a listening experience.  It's very tricky.

Try some gentle stretching. And drink some water. Then go for a jog.

Got the initial report back from my engineer about tuning the Promises vocals and it's not as good as I'd hoped for - we'll have no problems tuning any of the solos, but some of the most egregious notes are in male duets and because they're on either the same mic (unbelievable) or next to each other on separate mics without any separation or baffling, you can't isolate each to tune them and it's just about impossible to tune two voices that are out of pitch in different ways but locked together.  We'll play with it and I do have a little patented BK trick we can try to make those couple of notes a little less egregious - but the solos, no prob.

DR Jennifer - I agree(?) with DR Jane. I believe she was in shock.

People are under a great deal of stress when they place 911 calls. It's not right to judge them for our entertainment purposes.

I don't want to hear 911 calls, but I do enjoy occasionally a good 411 call.

Hmm..

Just listening to Jonathan Schwartz's show on WNYC...

He just played Maria Friedman's version of "Gorgeous".  He knew it was written by Bock & Harnick.  Alas, he did not know for what it (show) was written, The Apple Tree.

*However, that was the first time I had Maria Friedman's version... I LOVED IT!

Hi, everybody!  (A Dr. Nick from The Simpsons reference).  I've been unbelievably busy and that will continue for days to come, so forgive my E&T-ness.  I have missed quite a bit, I'm sure.  However, I did note a couple of questions:

Vixmom, yes the tenants came and they are really wonderful people.  I don't think we'll have any problem with them.

JRand--I have shopped at GEMM many times.  Just take the time to read the feedback on each individual seller before you buy anything.   I've managed to find quite a few rarities there, though they can be rather expensive--I always check eBay and Amazon first.

There's a strange, bright glowing orb in the sky this morning over Portland, Oregon.  Is it the apocalypse already?

OK... Time for me to get ready for my Day of Ballet. -The New York City Ballet, that is.  My "line buddy", Thomas, managed to snag comps to both programs, matinee and evening, today.  Looks like it should be a good day of Dance.
