Silly fun - A parody I'd posted as a comment on the NYTimes blog became an Arts Beat entry by David itzkoff.

New Tony Award Gets (Unofficial) Theme Song

By DAVE ITZKOFF

After ArtsBeat reported on Thursday that the Tony Award statuette was getting a larger, heavier redesign for Sunday night’s ceremony, at least one reader was inspired with more than just wistful yearnings for the past.

A commenter who gave his name only as Freddie wrote an entire song parody in honor of the new trophy, set to the tune of “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now” from “Hairspray.”

A sample verse:

Compared to what they’re giving at the Golden Globes
The Tony looked like something to hang from your lobes
So say, well lord have mercy, oy gevalt, and ow
‘Cause Tony is a big girl now!

The complete lyrics by Freddie can be found here.

--------------------------

(the original comment post)

Just imagining what Shaiman & Wittman, applying their memorable approach from last year's show to their own material, might do: :)

(tune of their MAMA I"M A BIG GIRL NOW - if you know how to reach them could you ask if they'd let me record and YouTube this?)

ALL
Stop – don’t – grow - please!
Stop – don’t – grow - please!
Stop – don’t – grow - please!
Tony, you’re a big girl now!

NIKKI
Many years ago when I was in a play,
I watched the Oscar winners when they’d have their say!
The Oscar looked so heavy as they’d take their bow!
But Tony’s gotten bigger now!

RICKY
Half a life ago when I was on TV,
I’d sit there at the Emmys, hope one day that’s me!
The Emmy looked as big as Madame Rose’s cow
But Tony is a big girl now!

ALL
Hey, size doesn’t matter but I must explain
The Tony always had so much style!
Now it’s such a workout that it’s such a pain
To carry Tony home
Feels like you ran a mile
Wo-oh-oh-oh-oh

NIKKI
Compared to what they’re giving at The Golden Globes
The Tony looked like something to hang from your lobes
So say, well lord have mercy, oy gevalt, and ow
‘Cause Tony is a big girl now!

Once upon a time when Daisy Eagan won
A Tony didn’t look like it would weigh a ton
But it’s more telegenic so hold on somehow
‘Cause Tony is a big girl now!

ALL
Stop – don’t – grow - please
Stop – don’t – grow - please
Stop – don’t – grow - please
Tony is a big girl now!

I had a great 2-hour shift at the AAUW garage sale.  Our customers included DH Richard and former co-workers from Dayton Metro Library and Miami University, including my former secretary.  Our earnings will top $1000 today and they still have a full day of business tomorrow.

Jan and I grew up together and she recalls BK from our teenage years. I don't think BK recalls Jan, though. Apparently, BK was most memorable. And how could he not be???    ;)

Well, last evening (11 pages 305 posts) we apparently solved the low posting totals.  All we have to do is to send TCB to bed early (and in a blue funk) and suddenly everybody flocks back to HHW!

I'm off to read wine labels on TV tonight. The local PBS station is having a fundraising auction, and I get to pronounce all the French words and Italian words that can often be tongue-twisters. So, ciao, which is pronounced "Ki-yo," right?
