GREASE IS THE WORD
« on: June 25, 2010, 12:36:04 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were the word and were greasy, and now it is time for you to post until the greasy cows come home - they're currently singing along to Hopelessly Devoted to MOO.

Topic of the Day:  in honor of BK's Grease sing-along, I'll listen to the original Broadway cast recording. :)

I also just received the original live cast recording to "Forbidden Hollywood" a couple of days ago, so I'll bring that to work, also!

I met Jamie Donnelly when I was living in upstate New York and she was writing a musical with Danny Troob, who orchestrated a bunch of pieces for the Disney animated musicals as well as "Big River" and other shows. She starred in the show, called "All Bets Off," which had a wonderful score. I can remember about six or seven of the songs all these years later. One in particular, "Take Me Down," was a great second act love song that they had Patti LuPone record for a backer's audition. I may still have that tape somewhere.

Jamie was also on the original Roxy recording of "Rocky Horror" singing "Science fiction/Double feature ..."

Thanks, BK, for reminding me of an old acquaintance who was really warm and great to be around.

TOD: Maybe this weekend I'll get around to "Romance and Cigarettes" on DVD.

MP3: "Gospel at Colonus" has been keeping me awake at work lately. I think it's likely to continue to do so today and Sunday, along with "Baby," "Grand Tour" and "Chess."

CD: "Sondheim at the Movies" and Galt MacDermot's "The Legend of Joan of Arc."

Friday morning greetings!  As expected, Fr. Richard didn't sleep much last night and is on his way over to church already this morning.  As promised, here's a photo of the new stained glass window:

Good morning, all! I slept fitfully, since I am in a bit of discomfort at the moment, but I did try to sleep in and I had the alarm set for 7:30. At 6:30 I figured, the hell with it and got out of bed. At 9, I'm having breakfast with Jerome Moross' daughter Susanna, and I am looking forward to that since she's a lovely lady. I am hoping that I am not lousy conpany today.

After breakfast, I have a package of family things to mail to Lorin McGlinn, John's sister, and I will pick up whatever's waiting for me at the post office. I also have to buy a bottle of vodka at some point and that depends on how grisly the weather is today.  During all the above, I have to revise some notes in my Main Reports and Critical Reports for the two Victor Herbert shows and look over the notes a friend has sent me about the new critical edition of KISS ME, KATE. The musical is finally being recognized in the world of serious musicology and that's great.

TOD:
DVD: 3 Netflix items still sit here, as well as a few other DVDs I've meant to watch
CD: Kimmel rare tracks, Liz Callaway, whatever strikes my fancy
  VCR: porn

DR ELMORE - I will get the charm in the mail on Monday!

DR CILLA LIZ is officially historical....that is nice.

Congrats to DR EDISAURUS on her Osterizer-ization AND her New York Opening Date!

Congrats to DR derBRUCER on indentifying his weeds.

And a wonderful review for MR BK's book!

Wow this place was hopping yesterday while I was pulling things together for BLITHE SPIRIT.  Another full run through last night - first act 65 minutes.....second act 58 minutes.....so I think we're okay......some judicious cutting using Mr Coward's own suggestions from the Ford Jubilee presentation (your DVD is on its way, DR CP) - helped tremendously.

And Sunday we build our set....so no more moving everything back and forth....the YTW presentation is tomorrow night - and then it will no longer be on our stage.....no more SHARING!

Here are some photos from the damned thing - click to enlarge - as they say:

Bruce got so see my other favorite Bruce, Bruce Davison. He starred in the first film I ever worked on, right out of college, and we became friends on that. He was a super-nice guy and lots of fun, especially when he would break out his guitar and sing old vaudeville songs like "You've gotta row, row, row" (What's the real name of that song?). The crew on that film, SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER was so nice that I thought that's the way all film crews were. Later, I learned that this sort of comraderie was pretty rare. They were from NY and had worked together a lot on Afterschool Specials and a short story series for PBS.

Bruce also guest starred on THE CLOSER last season, along with G.W. Bailey, who had one of his first roles in SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER. I wondered if they remembered that?

Bruce Davison said something in an interview several years ago that I've never forgotten.  We talked about it when I l saw him at the last Hollywood Celebrity Autograph Show I attended.

Actually, it was something that director Robert Aldrich told him.  Paraphrasing:  "If you want to be a leading man and are successful at it, you can probably get seven good years out of this business.  However, if you become a character actor, you can put your kids through college."

Gee, BK, I always liked Lucy's El Adobe.  It was more or less my go-to Mexican restaurant in LA.

What is Mr. Kleiser directing these days.  He and I had several nice meetings in the mid-eighties discussing projects that never came together.  He seemed a very nice fellow.

I'm awake!  One more day of All Shook Up and then it's off to Cancun for a week.  Through the miracles of free wifi, I won't leave HHW behind.  When we return, then the mayhem will set in.  For a week, I will be involved in 4 shows at once, which is not something I enjoy but it happened to end up that way.  By August 8, they will all be history.
