After I finished DAREDEVIL today, I nixed my previous intentions and put in BROTHER BEAR, another DVD with a fantastic DTS soundtrack. I'm only about 20 minutes in, haven't gotten to the place where the screen aspect ratio changes yet, but I'm enjoying it, and the sound is wunderbar.

Thank you TCB. I did get the link last week but it was not that successful - and NO! I was not asking the chicken to do that.

Weekly TV here has a dance competition - of the ballroom variety. I don't usually watch but last night one of the couples competing - samba, cha cha, tango. hip hop etc was male. They won. I didn't know there were Gay Dance sport world championships. The guys had competed there. They won on the final vote "the X factor" (sexual energy, audience appeal etc).

Btw, it is extremely hot here today.  It think it's 27C (which must be 80F at least).  Although it's quite windy.

Hello, all!  It's been a long day and I'm just checking in to say hello, as DR Panni did.  I'm on my last Mickey-Judy number, an endless (it seems) dialogue-sing-8-bars-dialogue-sing-4-bars bit.   It's on a series of badly sketched lead sheets, and I need to listen to the rehearsal tape a lot to put it together.  Damn!  I'd rather play on this site.

DUDLEY DO-RIGHT was funnier as a cartoon than a film but I liked its cheekiness.

I hadn't thought about the VHS of OH CALCUTTA in years; I never saw the show, but I did know several actors and acresses who were in it at the Edison.  It seemed to play there forever.  After it closed, a show called KA-BOOM! directed by John-Michael Tebelak of GODSPELL played there, one of the worst things I ever saw.  I knew one or two people in the cast, poor kids!

I was out earlier today, Dear Readers, on a job interview.  Inasmuch over the past few months I have had job interviews as infrequently as I have had dates (as in none),  this was a very special occasion.

It went well.  I'm pretty sure I made it to the next step, which is precisely the goal one should aim to achieve at each step in a selection process.

And, come to think of it, on dates, too!

Add my name to the list of those who enjoyed Big Fish.  Yes, the film did take a while to get underway.  Yes, Danny DeVito is nails on a blackboard.  But the whopper tales are beautifully shot, and I allowed myself to be transported by them.  I also enjoyed seeing Miss Jessica Lange on the big screen; few women are as gorgeous or as radiant as she.

I guess I'll try to slog through Big Fish at some point.  I never made it to the whopper tales - I don't know when they kick in but it certainly wasn't in the first thirty minutes of the film, which I found fairly unbearable.

Oh yes, my other favorite pizza to go along with pepperoni and mushroom!  Of course, for us it's called Canadian bacon and pineapple. :D

Damn it, now I'm hungry.

Last night I was at the Ahmanson Theatre, Dear Readers, to see a performance of Kaufman and Ferber's The Royal Family.  I had never seen this play before, and really did not know what to expect, other than that it was a loving parody of the Barrymore family.

I enjoyed it quite a bit!  Marian Seldes played the family matriarch, Fanny Cavendish, and she did a splendid job in an absolutely wonderful role.  Kate Mullgrew attempted to channel, alternately, Kate Hepburn and Tammy Grimes in her raspy voiced performance as Julie Cavendish.  Daniel Gerroll stole the show as the rakish Tony Cavendish.  The sets and costumes were finely detailed and gorgeous.

It was I who posted the subservient chicken link a while ago.  Believe it or not, there was a 5 minute story on it on rotation on CNN last week.  OY OY OY

I think I'm going to take my mucho $ that I earned this month and buy myself a new discman.  My last one kaputted last February and the trips on public transport between home-school-work have gotten a lot longer without music to distract me from the unwashed masses.

I also think I might just get around to purchasing and reading Benjamin Kritzer.

BK - can you advise me on which way you would prefer I place my order?  Through amazon?  Through you?

Thanks :D

I love THE ROYAL FAMILY. The Broadway version with Ellis Rabb (who also directed) was more or less taped for PBS and is now available on one of those Broadway Archive Theater DVDs and is grand.

It's got Eva LaGallienne as Fnny and also has Rosemary Harris and Sam Levene.

No, when I say I like bacon and pineapple I mean real bacon (not canadian bacon which is ham).

I have no idea why so many people in the US call it Canadian bacon.  It actually drives me crazy.  Cause it's NOT bacon.

Our local Native-American casino is opening their brand-new addition tomorrow night with a concert in their new showroom by Bobby Goldsboro.  Good Lord, I didn’t even know Mr. Goldsboro was still alive!  Has someone been storing him, along with Walt Disney, inside a great-big chest freezer up above New Orleans Square???
I think Bobby is in the autumn of his life honey. Guess you remember him in summer - the first time (when you were a broomstick cowboy). Was going to mention watching Scotty grow but thought you's get the wrong idea TCB. Has Bobby really left the straight life behind?

This is a picture of him from 5 years ago.  He was 56 then.  Looks a lot better than folks 10 years younger, or five, or ......  : )

Big Fish:

Count me as one of those who did "enter" that moving movie! I guess I was in the right mood for it but I tend to enjoy the "weirdness" of Tim Burton's films -- Thought ED WOOD was terrific.

If one stays all through the whole Big Fish thing one is rewarded with one of the most emotional moments I've ever experienced; to me, all the strange things seen before do make some sense in the end, and the scene at the lake/river had me in tears. Well, I easily cry at movies, I must admit.

It is also quite obvious that Mr Burton is a man who has a deep love for the human species and this movie is a visual proof of that. It's flawed, definitely, but so darn moving.

The only objection I have though is why Jessica Lange is filmed so poorly. They managed to make her look plain!
That scene where she joins "Mr Scrooge" in the tub is so special.... And again, it all makes sense at the end; things look thrown in but the film is better thought than it looks at first!

I guess, i don't see as many films as you all do on a regular basis and that makes me a little less "critical" than most. Oh, and the acting is top-noch, in my humble opinion bien sûr!

Chedia meck... Hmmm, media check:

Only use my cd player:

Some Disney music from the CD On Demand Store on Disneyland's Main Street.
Check the choice at:
http/::www.mouseshoppe.com

Little Night Music -- OBC, Melbourne Opera Cast, Studio Cast (TER/Jay)

and.... don't laugh!, How Now, Dow Jones?
All I can say is that everyone involved in this oeuvre sings with vigor and vim....

DR TCB; thank you for your sweet personal message to me!

I've read many articles that claimed that Brendan Fraser is also a very nice person in "real" life!

I may have to take another look at BIG FISH. I really didn't like it. BUT I fell asleep - so perhaps I missed all the good stuff. Saw it at the movies with my daughter who was very eager to go. I was tired to begin with and it just didn't grab me, so off I went to slumberland. She didn't know I'd fallen asleep, so I had to fake knowledge of what I'd just "seen" because she was so enthused. Aaarghhh.

I’m here but it’s taking me awhile to catch up on all the posts.

JRand-yep, that was it.  Thanks for posting Garfield to help add to the celebration yesterday.  I haven’t seen THE RED SHOES in years.

Jennifer I enjoyed BIG FISH.  It is different in an interesting way.  Granted, it’s not BEING THERE, but I liked it.  I think you will like LOVE ACTUALLY more than BIG FISH.  Let me know after you watch them.

I would guess Michelle Pfeiffer did her own singing, unless she was also dubbed in THE FABULOUS BAKER BROTHERS.
