TOD:

Salem's downtown area is actually a very busy place. Lots and lots of assorted locally owned shops, a huge used book store, several antique stores, some highly thought of restaurants, furniture stores, several department stores including J.C. Penneys.

Our current mayor has worked tirelessly in revitalizing our downtown, and it is really quite nice.

There is also a wonderful waterfront area complete with a carousel.

The north end of downtown had gotten a little scuzzy, but new buildings have been put up which contain an independent movie theatre, offices, shops, and apartments up above. It all is shaping up very nicely.

Salem does not have as much culture nor recognition as Portland, but it is working on it. One thing that has really helped is the huge Independent Film Festival we have each year.

WRT audiences & theater etiquette:

* I personally don't care if the person next to me dresses up or down to go to the theater, so long as he follows a decent personal hygiene regimen.

* I expect different standards of decorum at different shows. I accept a certain amount of audience noise at a Disney family show (although my experience has inevitably been that the children are significantly better behaved than the parents).

* The ridiculous sound blasting has gotten completely out of hand. Does nobody care about lyrics anymore?

* Rhythmic curtain call clapping is a phenomenon that has been going on for at least 20 years, to the best of my recollection. I wouldn't mind the over-enthusiastic audience reaction so much if at least once in a while we were allowed to boo a particularly bad performance (ask me about Civil War sometime...). Look, with prices getting as ludicrous as they have, any audience member who shows up expects to see something ovation-worthy...

Nope; although I used to hang out there Back in the Day...

We will be in Salem in about 3 hours!  Then on to L.A., slowly but surely.

Stop calling L.A. Shirley.

When I was little, my mom and I used to listen to a radio show called Don McNeil's Breakfast Club, during which he did a "March Around the Breakfast Table" segment.  I just did my first 5 minutes of cardio rehab, marching an ellipse around our breakfast AND dining room tables.

The latest Kritzerland release is still in it's package, and the last last or so are still in the shrink wrap, that's how far behind I am. But it will be ketchup and mayonnaise time this week, as there is a lot to do before the DP's mom and his niece and nephew arrive from PA next Sunday for a week of being a "tourist" in CA.  LA, Disneyland and SF (including Alacatraz) are on the agenda.

And FINALLY, I can concentrate on Sunset Blvd which auditions in 3 weeks.

I've been assured by a Citibank teller that my deposit will be accepted, even with the wrong deposit slip, and this contradicts the phone information I was given. So, I sent via their website an inquiry to Citibank who says I will get an answer in 2-3 days. Oy!

So, I've wrtten some info on Victor Herbert's orchestrators, I've answered some copyist inquiries, I wrote about the score for "The Garden Party," and I've had what may be my last solid meal for several days. I'm heading down to Toyland and then the dental clinic.

At the bank on our block, you can just put the check in the machine slot without  deposit slip and they give you a copy of the check you deposited.

Not sure why anyone is bothered that the Hilton theatre is being renamed the Foxwoods.

Now when we go to the theater, we can say;  MEET ME AT FOXWOODS!

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is one of those shows that went to hell in a hurry.  When I saw it, I thought that the sound quality was incredible--only "Life" seemed to get on the loud side.  But from what I later heard, the dial was routinely turned up to 11 at every performance.  I don't understand why this show in particular feels the need to be LOUD...

And the word of the day is: FANTOD!

I have an Edward Gorey deck of tarot-ish cards called the Fantod Pack but I never knew what it meant.

I just looked it up; good word! "A state or attack of uneasiness or unreasonableness, or nervous irritability."
I think we've all been there...

I've just returned from following someone who looked to be casing our street. He drove all through our neighborhood, and would pull over when he noticed I was following him. We've had a lot of break-ins lately in our 'hood. This guy pulled over 4 or 5 times and drove through most of the streets around us; it was obvious he wasn't lost. I hope he now knows that this is a neighborhood that is on alert.

Or maybe he was trying to get his GPS to say "pamplamoose." Do you have a "Grapefruit Street" in your neighborhood?

Eewwww...I just dealt with the chicken breasts that I'd put in teriyaki marinade before leaving last Tuesday for my meetings in Dayton.  We were going to grill them that night for dinner.  Poured off the sauce and bagged up the chicken to put out in the garbage tonight.

I wonder if Miss Betty Lynn received hers. . . .

Making Carne Asada burritos for dinner.  Beans, rice, mexican cheese, mexican crema, homemade pico de gallo and homemade guacamole.  This is what happens when you have worked almost 24/7 for 6 weeks.
