What are in your humble opinion are
The 5 Best Song to Win An Oscar
The 5 Worst Songs to Win An Oscar
Mind you I only know about half of the
76 songs in this category, so it might not be all that fair for me to opine, but here goes. These are my faves as
songs, not necessarily in terms of how well they worked or didn't work in the movie.
Favorites: *
The Way You Look Tonight: Perfection. I can listen to 30 versions of this song and not get tired.
*
Somewhere Over the Rainbow: See above.
*
Under the Sea: Like almost every Disney song, the Hebrew version is better, but what can you do?
*
Sooner or Later: One of Sondheim's lesser songs outshines 90% of the shlock out there
*
Streets of Philadelphia: Bruce can do little wrong. Now, if he'd just enunciate a bit better so that we can hear those lyrics...
Least Favorites*
Que Sera Sera: Sorry, grandma - my teeth hurt every time I hear this one
*
Windmills of Your Mind: shoot me now
*
You Light up My Life: Only good thing about this song is that the brilliant Elaine Brier got to do her far-better-and-apropos spoof "You F***ed up My Life"
*
My Heart will go On: Confession time: I wore out two of Celine Dion's early U.S. albums. This piece of treacle, however, makes me wanna puke.
*
White Christmas: Sorry; as an Orthodox Jew, I can't help shouting at the speakers whenever this song comes on: Really, Irving? "Just like the ones you used to know" where, exactly? Back in the
shtetl?
Back to work now...
