Well, you've read the notes, the notes were as shiny as brass and just a little tacky, and now it is time for you to post until the tacky cows come home.

Thursday morning greetings!  I zonked out last night before 11pm and slept quite well.  My meeting doesn't start until noon, so I'll have a relaxing morning before heading downtown.

TOD

I've only seen less than a handful of films

So
The Boyfriend
Tommy
Altered States

and I did see The Devils but I wouldn't call it a favorite. I was very young and somehow I passed for 18 years old. I wondeed how people could remain religious during the the time the movie was set. wow!

One day I would like to see Women In Love

Good morning, all! I went to bed early and missed a telephone call from Mr Skip Kennon. I slept rsther well, with bizarre dreams featuring my mother and her demented, slovenly housekeeping and a production of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well.

Today, I have several phone calls to return, possibly a trip to the NYPL at Lincoln Center, which I could put off till tomorrow, and work on an opening night gift for my friend Ron Raines.

There's been a rumor circulating for years that someone at Warner Brothers is boycotting a VHS/DVD release of Ken Russell's shocker THE DEVILS, which is one of my favorite films. I would like to see the film in a good print once again before I die, since it's based on a wonderful play by John Whiting and a fantastic history by Aldous Huxley, The Devils of Loudon. All three pose the question: which are the devils, the "possessed" nuns or the exorcists and their supporters?

Other Russell films I like: WOMEN IN LOVE, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, SALOME'S LAST DANCE,  TOMMY, THE BOY FRIEND

DR elmore - Maybe you mentioned it already, but...

Are you part of the presentation of 'Selections from Victor Herbert's Operetta Eileen on Saturday at the NYPLPA?

I knew the NYPL was having a huge Irish-American series of events, but I have no idea who's behind this presentation.

As for the Topic of the Day...

When I was in college, I remember renting the three composer bio-pics and watching them back-to-back over the course of a weekend:

"The Music Lovers"
"Lisztomania"
"Mahler"

-And I wish I had been able to catch them last year when they were presented at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Otherwise...

"The Boy Friend"

-Which I only ever seemed to catch in late-night TV showings.

Now I need to make a run up to my storage unit, and sort through some boxes.

Laters...

My wife and I watched THE BOY FRIEND last night.

Overall, we enjoyed it very much...but, I think, the US theatrical release version (at 110 minutes) would probably play a lot better than this 135 minute version.

This version is way too long.

The repetitive backstage jokes become stale, and a couple of sequences (i.e. the "satyr" fantasy, the last section of the "Bloomsbury" number) should have been cut.  They're boring...and stop the movie in its tracks.

But, I love the music, the Busby-like numbers and Twiggy is terrific.

I wish I knew Russell's work a little better. I was a kid when Tommy came out and I remember it giving me nightmares, so put that on the plus side.

I later caught and enjoyed "The Boyfriend," "Mahler" and "Women in Love."

"Lizstomania" is one I'd like to see. I remember Pauline Kael's review in which she imagined the life of the set builders who had to create the giant penis for Roger Daltry to dance on.

BK, loved the vintage Wilshire Blvd clip from last night!

Looked at a lot of the other vintage clips...one thing about Los Angeles drivers, even then they didn't bother with using their turn signals. Must be an inherited trait.

DR ELMORE I have a DVD release of THE DEVILS, but it is a very poor print and looks like it was transported without any improvement from a not so hot VHS.

Nope it's Van de Kamp's restaurant.  My father originally owned that property and had another location of his restaurant there - he made the bad mistake of making it a dinner place - and by dinner no one was left on the Miracle Mile so it was a disaster and he got rid of it.  Van de Kamp's opened their place and it was hugely popular for a very long time - with the lunch crowd.

Queen For A Day was filmed at Frank Sennes' Moulin Rouge, on Sunset just east of Vine - later that became the Aquarius Theater and it's now home to Nickelodeon network.
