The City Yard Police patrols our neighborhood. No one called and reported us. I have never called and reported anyone, but I am glad when I see the house across the street getting cited, because the renters there don't do any yard work until they are cited.

I've only been cited twice -- once was many years ago when they seemed to think I had too many summer wildflowers. Once was a year or so ago when the neighbor dumped the dirt along my fence in the alley.

After this one it gets easier.

I have reported the people across the street from me every year.  There is a strip across the street, then woods, then their house at the bottom of the hill.  They never bother to cut the weeds across from my house, The weeds get so long the fall into the street.  If you get reported you have a chance to cut them down before you get cited.  So, I don't mind reporting them

Do any of our excellent cooks here ever cook okra? I have heard of roasting it, but I haven't tried that.

Okra is very expensive out here. One year I had it growing in the backyard like crazy, but this year I couldn't get the plants to survive. I think the snails ate the seedlings.

BearManor Fiction is starting to take pre-orders for my forthcoming book of short (and not so short) stories, DRACULA MEETS JACK THE RIPPER And Other Revisionist Histories.

http://bearmanorfiction.com/?page_id=125

The book will be shipping around the end of this month.

I'm rather proud of this one.

It gives me the opportunity to do what I enjoy doing most (i.e. tell stories).

Laura, I, too, have been wondering about this Yard Police thing.  Why in heaven's name would having "too many" flowers be a problem?  Is stuff like that actually in your city charter?

It turns out that was the actual, honest to goodness German Ambassador to the U.N. last night on Colbert.  The clip of him doing his "Stand Up Comedy" starts after a brief (and funny) intro at about 12:00 minutes in:

I love brocolli, but I've never liked the way it's cooked in restaurants these days - steamed until it's bright green. That's just not quite cooked enough for me. It's too tough and stringy that way. I don't want it turned into a pile of mush either - I like it very slightly yellowed, so it's firm, but tender. I've been trying to lose a little weight for a family reunion that's happening mid-August. Mark and I wound up at a Famous Dave's for lunch last week, which doesn't sound very low-calorie, but I order the roasted chicken which comes with 2 sides, and corn on the cob. I chose the brocolli and green beans as my sides, skipped the corn bread muffin, since I don't like corn bread anyway, took most of the skin off the chicken and didn't put butter on anything. So, I think it was a pretty low-calorie meal. Who the HELL do I think I am, Bruce Kimmel all of the sudden? Anyway, I had to eat the brocolli like it was finger-food because it was so under-cooked (in my opinion) that it was tough and stringy and impossible to cut with a dull table knife. Next time I'll ask them to cook it longer.
