CABARET 101
« on: July 18, 2011, 12:01:15 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a cabaret old chum, and now it is time for you to post until the cabaret cows come home.  They're currently performing at Don't Tell MooMoos.

TOD:

I used to attend a series of Cabaret shows at the Crest Theater in Delray. (Which DR Arnold Brockman also attends) and there many wonderful performers where they performed a two act version of the show. In all the years I attended I think there were many five performaners I did not care for.

I also go a few times a year to The Colony Hotel in West Palm Beach and they have a small room where performers do 70 minute or so show.

Most of them follow Cabaret 101 rules but I still enjoy the shows.

As for their names there are just too many.

We're back from Long Island. I have new glasses and I'm back at the office.

Anthony is recovering from a cold.

It's supposed to be 92 today. It's in the 70s right now.

I'm having iced coffee this morning. I know it's not as good as plain water but I love iced coffee and since it's supposed to be so hot I decided to indulge.

Good morning, all! I was having one peculiar dream involving some sort of reunion and casting a Sondheim revival, so at least two of the folk I can remember from this dream are Victoria Mallory and Stev Sondhem. Beyond that, it's all too vague.

Today, I am off to Toyland to use the office scanner as soon as I finish my coffee. Sooner done, the sooner back, and that makes me very happy.

I have little else to report at the moment, so I'll stop now and check in from Toyland.

I haven't seen as much cabaret as I would like, but nobody was better IMHO than Bobby Short.

When I lived in Sarasota, Ann Morrison from "Merrily We Roll Along" lived there and did several cabaret acts that were also quite wonderful. I remember one song in particular she did that I liked about burning bridges before we crossed them.

I would love to get rid of mosques.  They are most annoying, especially at the local drive in theatre....and on a hot night, you have to keep the windows of the car rolled up.....and outside at night it is very irritating to keep brushing them off your arms...and....

What?......oh.........

Never mind.

Well a couple of years ago, when we were doing a fund raiser for the theatre group.....I put together a cabaret type show.....it was on Valentine's Day......

So I decided to have three couples.....one young, one older, and one OLDER......and chose some lovely songs about love and marriage and relationships.....as the evening went on, each of the relationships grew, changed, and then either ended or continued.....etc.  There were also a few group numbers....including of course It's the Little Things from COMPANY.

WELL.....the director decided he would have ALL of the songs  sung by different people, so that the point of the idea was lost....and the evening was a muddled mess.....

But someday I will do it again - correctly!

I have not seen much cabaret.....but there are a couple of local performers I enjoy very much....Su Ours and David Meek.....and I always attend their show.  Miss Deb Mullins is also very good.

Miss Su Ours did a nice Dorothy Parker evening that included some songs (and readings) that was delightful.

I'm up and have been having a very frustrating morning which I need to be OVER NOW!  I went to send the eBlast only to find it's the one thing I hadn't prepped.  I was sure I had, but no.  So, I had to announce on the FSM board, then hurry and do the eBlast thing and get that out, and then I'd gotten an e-mail from amazon payments about the Kickstarter thing but I can't get into my payments account because my usual password isn't working and I can't figure out what the HELL is going on - so I called and talked to a nice guy but he couldn't help because I have to talk to someone in the payments department - he switched me over to find they don't arrive until seven - so they're supposed to call me at seven - since I doubt that will be happening, I'll probably have to call them back.  It's been like that since I arose at six.  AOL via mac mail is being retarded and won't let me respond to any e-mails, so I have to log on to AOL to do it and that's REALLY annoying.

I've done cabaret.  I've done CABARET.  It's easier to watch (and complain about) than it is to do.  :)

TOD:
I admit I haven't seen too many caberet shows - mostly I've seen Jason Graae shows repeatedly and always have a perpetual smile on my face throughout the entire show. He's my fav.

Of course, Elaine Strich's show is incredible, even though she's a terrible singer, she's so funny and such a good actress that it makes you not care.

I also enjoyed Barbara Cook's show very much. Considering her age, her voice is amazing. She did one strange thing at the end - she sang the very last song without a mic. We thought she was going to belt out something really incredibly loud and show everyone she could sing without a mic, but instead she sang something really quiet, and we didn't get the POINT of that. We just felt sorry for everyone in the back row who probably couldn't hear the song at all.

Shirley Jones does a very nice one-person show, although you kind of never know what her voice is going to sound like that night. Sometimes she sounds great and other times you think it may be time for her to retire.

DR TCB so glad that your MRI went well and that they now have new machines. I was hoping you'd get one of those.

Yesterday's Moment of Hilarity Department:  I was taking the boys to the restaurant for dinner and that new Jarreau/Deodato song came on XM and I told the boys how I had spent the morning trying to figure out the lyric.  Gabe, ever the all knowing teenager, informed me he would be able to figure it out, no problem.  And so I asked him what Jarreau was singing.  Unfortunately, it was the intro scat section, and so of course my smart-aleck son turned to me and said, "Dibby dabby nub nub ba-da ba-da."  :)

I adore Bernard Herrmann's score for OBSESSION.  It's wonderful in the movie and on its own. It is bomabastic when it has to be, but it has some lovely melodies.  I wish it were available again.

Perhaps I should know the answer to this, but I don't.

Or, maybe I did, but I've forgotten it.

What's the difference, if any, between a nightclub and a cabaret act?

I saw Sinatra in Vegas, Durante at Melodyland and Tony Newley at Northridge,

Do they count as "cabaret acts"?

And, if you want to include comics, then I also enjoyed Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett and Jack Carter in Vegas.

And, Howard Keel put on a great show with Kathryn Grayson.
