TOD:

I've never been a believer in workshops.

You take a dozen screenwriters or musical comedy writer/composers or whatever and put them in the same room, and you get a dozen different viewpoints.

That can be very confusing to the original writer.

That's not to say that you should not listen to outside suggestions.

BUT, you should pick one or two professionals who you trust (e.g. BK's guru, Margaret) and just listen to them.

When I was writing scripts for Roger Corman, each draft I wrote would be circulated to a half-dozen people on his staff...and they would all submit notes.

I refused to read the individual notes.

Instead, I asked Roger's story editor, whose opinion I totally trusted, to go over the notes and just give me the ones that she felt were valid.

Too many cooks, as they say, can spoil the broth.

We had a nice dinner with Gabe at Oswego Grill, where Gabe feasted on Filet Mignon for the first time.

Then we came home and Betsy and I watched THE BIG LEBOWSKI, which I must review today.

TOD:

Here's a short excerpt from my memoir that bears out BK's point-of-view:

I never really took any courses in screenwriting or read any books on
the subject, though I had read some scripts to learn the technical format.

I think my knowledge of story structure, character development, dialogue
and all the other aspects of what goes into a proper screenplay came
from having seen so many movies over the years that I just “absorbed” it.

One of my dearest friends is actress Diane McBain (Ice Palace,
Parrish), a major ingénue star of the 1960s. For many years, Diane served
as my “sounding board”. I would write several pages of a script, and then
read them to her over the phone. If she laughed at the right places, I
knew I was on the right track.

At one point, Diane decided that she wanted to do some
screenwriting, so she started reading books on the subject.

“It’s amazing,” she told me one day, “how in all of your scripts your
plot points hit on just the right pages. At least, according to these books.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Your story’s ‘catalyst’ hits on page five or six, your ‘first turning
point’ occurs around page twenty-five or so…”

“Why did you tell me that?” I said.

“Huh?”

“Now, you’ve made me aware of the process, and I’m going to be
thinking about it every time I sit down to write a script.”

Being aware of “the process” did become a problem for awhile. As
I’ve said, I do my best work when I am writing “by the seat of my pants”.

In other words, once I have a story idea, my key characters and a
very general outline on how the plot will progress, I like to just sit down
and write, letting the characters “take me where they will”. Structure just
seems to take care of itself.

However, after Diane put the thought into my head, for the next
couple of scripts that I wrote, I started editing myself, saying “Oh my
God, did I hit my catalyst on page five or six, my first turning point on
page twenty five…?”

Too much knowledge can not only be dangerous. It can also be
distracting.

I've workshopped several shows, and it helped in some ways, didn't in others.  You just have to go in with a clear vision of what you want, take the advice you think is appropriate, and ignore the rest.  :)

No. Not a new incident MR BK - I just know what a thrill it gives that person to be mentioned here, so I thought I would make her day....in my own special way.

I have only been involved in a couple of original shows.....but I think the writer has to be charge, or things get seriously damaged.

As for the "rules" - it's the reason why nothing really works and everything looks to same....too bad.

Of course too much "originality" can kill a show, too.

TOD, as it applies to "rules":  Amen!  When rules stifle creativity, throw out the rules!  Say no to the rules!  Damn the rules all to hell!

A little surprised to see Jay David Saks listed as the music producer of the new DG Blu-ray of Don Pasquale I have to review.

I'm up.  Looks pretty outside.  I guess I got eight and a half hours of sleep, although I woke up at eight-thirty thinking I heard a knock on the front door - it must have been in my dream.  Then I fell back asleep for another hour.

And, alas, I must hie myself to the theatre for today's put-in rehearsal for our new/old "Cord Elam". And then I'm meeting a friend who came down from NYC today to see the show for dinner.

Just back from the vet and a $500.00 bill for my cat, Annie.

Ultrasound, blood work, etc.

She has 4 large cysts in her liver.

No way to know if they're malignant without opening her up for a biopsy...and I'm not going to put her through that.

Whatever they found, they couldn't do anything about it anyway.

Fingers crossed.

Yes, JRand, it is ALWAYS nice to see Allison Hayes' lovely face!

I often wonder if I shall continue adding to my Allison Hayes 8x10 stills collection...but when a new, never before seen (by me) shot of Ally shows up on Ebay, I sometimes can't resist putting in a bid...and on occasion I actually win!
