Hearty laugh o' the day department:  Did anyone else see the hysterical article about the taxi driver who charged the lady $20 who jumped out of that Caribbean plane that crashed yesterday (everyone survived) to take her back to the terminal?

DR Cillaliz, do the cats sleep in your room? Is that why they keep waking you? Or could you just close your door?

Anyhoo...

I don't really have to do much packing, but the more I stay online, the more I dawdle, and the more I don't get to packing, so...

I've never seen SWEET CHARITY on the stage, just the movie several times, which I really like.

Question:

The DVD has an alternate ending that is much more upbeat (i.e. McMartin character changes his mind and comes back to her) than the one in the theatrical release of the movie.

How does the play end?

Also, does anybody know whatever became of Suzanne Charney?

I used to know her way back in the 1960s.

The original musical ends like the original ending of the film, more or less.

I liked the DVD of The Corn Is Green......but I am disturbed by how much grain is in the picture.

GOSFORD PARK is *much* better the second (or third, or fourth) time around, after you have the gist of what's going on and can start actually paying attention.  :)

I will say do NOT get the Canadian/French Alliance Blu-ray release.  It's horrible.

There are some people who just hate DNR, I deal with them all the time on Blu-ray.com.  And to be fair, Universal especially is over aggressive with noise reduction on a lot of their catalog releases, leaving a kind of smeary, waxy look as a result.  It doesn't bother me as much as it does some, but it is noticeable.

The sort of haloing in SWEET CHARITY from backlighting is also not the same haloing (also called ringing and edge enhancement) you get from too much artificial sharpening.  That also doesn't drive me as crazy as it does some people (especially those with huge projection systems where it shows up more readily), but again it's very noticeable on some releases.

What I hate is aliasing and shimmer.  If we put a man on the moon, why can't we compress video so that it doesn't freak out when there are parallel lines or close-cropped patterns to resolve.  Of course, maybe we didn't actually put a man on the moon.  ;)

DR ArnoldMBrockman, your PM is something you should ask BK, Druxy or Pogue.  They might have a better idea than I.

I loved SWEET CHARITY so much I actually forced my mother to take me to downtown Seattle (something she was normally loathe to do) to drop me off to see THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS with George C. Scott and Diana Rigg, as the accompanying second feature (remember when THAT used to happen?) was SWEET CHARITY.  I believe that time it was the edited general release version.

Terrifying tale of coke use in BK's notes.

Or was that diet Coke use?

So on the movie grosses front, COWBOYS & ALIENS is running very close to the SMURFS movie in box office receipts.  Hollywood wags are said to be very surprised by this.  Was SMURFS expected not to do so well?

The "happy ending" version of Sweet Charity was never in the film past the preview stage.  It was a banner year for Universal doing that kind of thing - Topaz had three endings shot.

SMURFS is essentially a "Family" film - even though most of the people who would actually know about "The Smurfs" are no longer children. And since "children" don't buy movie tickets, well... And "Cowboys & Aliens" has two major box office draws: Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.
