DR BEN
If you use the #7 to delete the calls try 77 during the message. I do that for my house phone.

Michael, I've tried everything. A voice mail message cannot be deleted without listening to it. It's one of the quirks of my phone system.

DR George - Sorry to hear about your friend. I, too, hope that she was given some advance notice.

Thanks, Jose.  I have just found out that, no, she wasn't given advance notice.  She was told on Friday and was escorted out the door.

What's really interesting is that it was exactly four years ago this weekend (July 31, 2007) that my friend Margo's "position was eliminated" and she lost her job from here, also...and she wasn't given any advance notice, either.  They told her and then walked her to her office to get her stuff and escorted her out.  It seems like they always do it on a late Friday afternoon. :P

George - I wonder whether she at least got severance.  vibes to your friend, no matter what.

Thanks, Fred.  I don't think that she was.  I'd heard that she was totally blindsided.  Her position was "exempt," meaning not covered by the union (and our previous Staff Association) contract.

Joshie is at the veterinary dentist. He will have all his teeth removed today. It is costing a whole lot more than the estimate the regular vet gave me.

I just ran into this yesterday for the first time with our new Comcast voicemail.  The only thing I figured out is that pressing 3 fast forwarded me through the (very long) message, probably about 10 seconds at a time.  I think maybe pressing 33 gets you right to the end of the message.

I now have a very handsome silver siamese teenage kitten who will be staying with me through his course of antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection.

I'm up after eight hours of sleep.  Do you know the only time I ever have vocal problems are when I know I have to sing?  It's all in my head and it happens every time - ridiculous.  The only two times in the last decade where I have had laryngitis so bad that I had to go to the doctor were - wait for it - before both Guy Haines albums.  Stupid.

Oh, did Guy Haines let you sing on his albums?

It would be kind of fun to have Guy Haines and Bruce Kimmel sing a duet.

Back from the grantwriters' meeting.  The longer I'm retired the less relevant and interesting these things become.

It's been a long day, but mostly an enjoyable one. I had a great 4-hr visit wth the Kurt Weill Foundation; I looked at the full scores, programs, piano sketches for KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY and visited with Dave Stein, the archivist, and Elmar Jochem, who's editing the new edition of JOHNNY JOHNSON.

After that I stopped by Toyland to pick up our record producer's full scores, stopped by Rodgers & Hammerstein to see Bruce Pomahac, came home and made the bank deposit I stupidly forgot to do yesterday. Damn!

Back from the four-mile jog.  Broiling out.  About three blocks from the home environment on my way back a guy said I deserved a medal of honor.

Totally confused by Kickstarter when it comes to CD releases.  if someone puts money towards, say, Michael Arden's CD, is it a gift to Michael Arden - or do they get the money back, if the CD pays off and is a hit?

The train ride down was uneventful. Alas, I don't think the A/C helped my more-than-likely summer cold. Ah, well. I stopped at CVS and picked up some OTC stuff. Hopefully, this won't linger too long.

I splurged on a cab from DC's Union Station to the theatre - if you can call an $8 fare a splurge. -It would have cost me $3.10 on the Metro and a transfer and about 25 minutes of transit time, as opposed to a nice 10-minute ride from door to door. In any case...

I have to say that even though the DC taxicab commission always seems to be in a constant state of turmoil and scandal, the cab drivers have really been pretty amazing lately. The one who just drove me actually knew where Arena Stage was, and even asked me which route I thought would have the least amount of traffic at 3:30 in the afternoon (the start of rush hour). We both guessed right. :)

It's basically money used to defray the costs of recording the CD. By contributing via Kickstarter, you do not become a "producer", and are thus not entitled to any possible royalties.

Am I imagining it, or do D.C. cab drivers seem more relaxed about traffic since it's no longer  a flat fee depending on the travel between different zones, or whatever they were called?

Although that whole Zone System had the potential to be bad for both the driver and the passenger. There were places in the city where one side of the street was one zone, and the other side of the street was another. For an unsuspecting passenger, they could have been charged extra unknowingly(?). Conversely, if the passenger did realize what Zone he was being dropped off in, he could then ask the cabbie to drop him off on the other side of the street in order to avoid the additional surcharge. Way too many U-turns during rush hour.
