I now must leave.  Theater Artists Olympia is having our monthly board meeting and since I'm on the board (officer at large), I will be at the meeting...now that I know about it.  Last month, I never got the e-mail about the board meeting.

Be back later!

T.O.D.

You should not get me started on people and their cell phones.  A couple of years ago, Washington State made it illegal to talk or text while driving.  But you could only be ticketed if you were stopped for another reason.  so, of course, there was absolutely no change in people's phone habits while driving.  This past year they changed the law, so that you could be stopped and ticketed for talking or texting while driving.  AND IT STILL HASN'T HAD ANY EFFECT ON PEOPLE.  At least half of the drivers I see around town are still talking and texting; as if the law applies to everyone but them.

And the total rudeness of people in stores and banks, who treat the clerks like they are ATM machines. They keep chatting or screaming or whatever as if there was no one waiting on them.  Most of them can't say anything, but I have started to speak up.  Last week I told a man in front of me in line that he was being extremely rude to the clerk.  I don't think he even knew I was talking to him, because he kept on talking.

I'm up after eight hours of sleep.  Do you know the only time I ever have vocal problems are when I know I have to sing?  It's all in my head and it happens every time - ridiculous.  The only two times in the last decade where I have had laryngitis so bad that I had to go to the doctor were - wait for it - before both Guy Haines albums.  Stupid.

Did you do some singing on Guy Haines' CDs?

Oh, did Guy Haines let you sing on his albums?

Very rare video of Guy Haines singing

One of my all-time Guy Haines songs.

I tried various searches and came up empty.

Coincidence:  I once prepared for a colonoscopy and came up empty.

(Just kidding.)

I find having a cell phone invaluable - with two elderly parents , two elderly inlaws, Vixdad commuting to and from Brooklyn and the Vixter flitting here and there it has been our way  of keeping track of each other and yes I will get a call that says I just "I just got on the train"  or "I just left mt friend's house" and then I know when to expect them home

I no longer give out my home number as my home number - if someone needs to reach me they call my cell phone - I turn it off when I go to dinner, or church or the theatre

Last year as I was waiting in line to ride  roller coaster in New Jersey I received sa cell phone call that my Mom had a seizure and was in the hospital

when the church van full of kids broke down on the way home from a trip  my cell phone called AAA

and when I unexpectedly ended up in NYC one evening my cell phone netted me a lovely visit with Ben and Anthony

Yes some people have appalling manners - but lets not blame the cell phones -  those mannerless clods would found some other way to be rude if they didn't have cellphones

TOD - I've had a mobile phone since 1994, when I got my first job with a long commute.  It was big and clunky and resided in a bag under the passenger seat of my car for emergencies only.  Except, I used it so seldom that in an emergency I wasted time reading the directions and connecting it to my car's cigarette lighter.  As the phones have gotten smaller, I've used my cell more and more and probably will not have a land line if we ever move from this house.

Texting became invaluable to us 2 years ago when Richard's brother was so sick.  We'd keep in touch with his wife and daughter, but not have to interrupt their time with him with conversations.  I don't text much because my phone doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard so it's kind of a pain.

The most annoying thing I do with my cell phone is make Ohio State fans hear my ringtone - "Hail to the Victors."

That said one day at church I was sitting in the 2nd pew directly in front of the pulpit and during the sermon  (right during one of those long meaningful pauses) my cell phone went off-  it was of course buried in the bottom of my purse and sang  atteh top of its voice for what seemed ages ....

I was sure I had turned it off  and was horribly embarrassed - so I always cut someone slack when they get a call in an inappropriate location-

however should they ANSWER the call -  should they have the conversation

(Unless of course the words  'Was anyone hurt?  Which ER are they in?    You got me a liver?! are uttered)

then I will be peeved and have been known to instruct people to put their phones away

Today I had a cancellation of removal hearing in Omaha.  We win my client gets a green card.  We lose, after 18 years in the US she would be deported to Guatemala.   We won.

Excellent news!

I am not a texter -  but we did get texting capable phones thos Christmas as an especial treat for the Vixter -  she texts me at work now which is actually quite useful - she is bicycling back and forth from church every day - and it beings me comfort to get a text  "at church safe"  "Home safe"  without getting numerous personal calls at the office - it takes 10 sends for me to see that text (the phone is on vibrate)  and brings me peace of mind
