Been reading up on this - apparently all new cc's and licenses have RFID chips and those can be read easily right through your wallet by any number of means including - get this - an iPhone app!  I should think iPhone and Apple would not allow that but maybe they have no control over apps?  They now sell wallets with shielded cc pockets and I'm looking into buying one of those today.

Clearly this is what probably happened, although neither my paypal or bank debit card are new - the bank card is at least two years old and same with paypal, at least I think so.  I'm going to keep my eye on the bank card for the next three weeks - I'll call daily to make sure no suspicious activity and I'm going to ask them to keep their eye on things.

They had a story on the news about this a couple of months ago.

There is a new piece of equipment that allows you to read/copy a person's credit card through their wallet or purse.  You just need to be standing next to them...even in a crowd.

TOD:

Back in 1999, when I went to Ireland for 2 months to make THE DOORWAY, I paid my mortgage and all my other bills 2-3 months in advance.  The day before I left, I called my credit card companies, asked what my balance was, and sent them a check for that amount.  I did not use my credit cards once when I was in Ireland.

When I got home and got my first credit card bill, there was a charge for $240.00 on it that was made while I was away.

How it happened, I have no idea...but it was very simple to correct the error.

I assume that the merchant had to eat the charge.

TOD, Part 2:

Once, back in the mid-1990s, I made a purchase at a bookstore on Ventura Blvd., then drove over to another store about 15 minutes away.

I started to make a purchase on the same credit card, but it was declined.  I called the credit card company from the store and, apparently, during that 15 minute drive, somebody had compromised that credit card.

I made the purchase with another card, and I received a new card from the first company within a week.

TOD - One of the reasons I rarely use a credit card to pay a restaurant bill is that I don't like the idea of strangers taking my card who-knows-where do do who-knows-what with it.

...And then there are those scanners that thieves can place on top of the actual card read at at ATM. I've seen some news reports about those, and those really scare me.

Of course, those types of apps were developed for a more benevolent purpose: allowing mobile vendors to accept credit cards at places such as street fairs, flew markets, craft fairs, etc. (I guess, I hope.)

What's even scarier is that anyone can go into a retail supply shop and buy their own credit card scanner. That type of equipment is no longer handled exclusively by the credit card companies. Heck, there's even a piece of hardware for an iPhone/iPad/Droid/etc. that is a very compact credit card swipe scanner.

That is how a lot of cards get compromised.

TOD: Someone apparently hijacked my business ATM card even though I had never used it. I hadn't wanted the card in the first place. It was cancelled shortly thereafter. My former business partner took care of the mess and made it seem like he worked weeks on it, when all it took was a single phone call to the bank. I had to sign papers about the purchases to verify that they were not made by me (I was nowhere near New York at the time and could prove it). It was certainly stressful that it had occurred. Thankfully getting it cleared up was not a problem.

I am back from a good but very long band rehearsal. Tonight I have to do some emergency work to make the dialogue user friendly: too many papers and difficult to follow. I now know better what to do in future.

The hotel is filled with French folk today, including the French rugby team, who beat the Irish this afternoon. I suspoect there may be in the team some serious French husband material for DR MBarnum in forty years. But he's not here.

I'm going to run out, find some dinner and get to work. Our  producer Joe will come by after his gig tonight - he's a bass player - and pick up the material from the concierge. Excelsior!

I think 65,000 will be the next milestone.  Listening to the unmastered version of what will be our next release - another from Kritzerland's most represented composer.
