I just posted about my latest credit card problem the other day. I will say that Discover told me that they would take care of it as soon as I confirmed that I didn't "recognize" the charge. They are crediting me for it. Didn't recognize it is an understatement. I had just filled my tank with gas. As I have only one car and it has only one gas tank and I didn't lend my card to anyone, ergo, the second charge (same station, same day) was in error.

I've had other problems in the past, all of them resolved quickly. A couple years ago I spotted a $100 charge with a very strange description in lieu of the name of the merchant. I called my credit card company and they told me it was to an Internet porn site. That charge was immediately credited back to me as soon as I said, "Not mine!" Of course, we had to cancel the card, always an inconvenience.

Jennifer, I'm told that thieves often "try out" a card by making a very small--usually a $1.00--purchase. If it's accepted, then they go ahead and buy what they REALLY want.

I use credit cards a lot, for both the convenience and the rebate points. But I keep all the receipts and review my bills carefully. I like being able to see my charges online, too, as you can catch problems much sooner than if you waited for the hardcopy bill to arrive.

Also, not all erroneous charges are fraud. Some years ago, while working in the corporate world, I bought most of my business clothes at Nordstrom. One day I had purchased a couple items there and, while they were being rung up, I spotted a jacket I hadn't noticed. I was trying it on and my salesperson came over to help me. I didn't buy the jacket, but when my bill arrived I couldn't make sense of the charges. Yes, I had purchased items X and Y, but what was this $160? I called Nordstrom. They could identify EXACTLY what was purchased just from the code on my bill. The $160 was for a pair of pants in a size 2. I was quite slender when I was young, but I NEVER wore a size 2 pants! I knew those weren't mine! I think what happened is that my salesperson laid down my card to come over and help me and another salesperson mistakenly picked it up and rang up another sale. An honest mistake, but not one I wish to pay for.

Speaking of Nordstrom's, as DR Jeanne was, while in the Cincinnati store Thursday I heard bits and pieces of a song I'd like to identify. The lyrics were something like "to find someone who loves you, you have to be someone who loves you." Any ideas?

Canada has adopted interesting way to safe guard your purchase. Just like your ATM card the Credit Cards have a chip in the, and you need a PIN to finalize the purchase. (An ATM card can be used as CC in the US without the pin number) In restaurants they bring over a small mobile machine where you insert the card, (look over the charges and aff tip) you put in your PIN number and you take out the card. The waiter never touches it. A look of retail stores have also adopted this methoc.

Perhaps the US should adopt this put a micro chip in ATM and force to put in your pin before the transaction can be completed amd do the same for credit cards. It may cost money to do this, but it would cut down on fraud and the milliond of dollars lost to fraud.

Mystery Water Department: several times over the past few days we have noticed a small puddle of water underneath the freezer side of the fridge. I have of course pulled it out and checked all of the water connections, and I also checked the overflow tray. Nada. I did pull off the bottom grill and discovered the poor thing had probably never been vacuumed in however long it's been in this house (my guess is at least 10 years) and you would not believe the dust. I'm wondering if so much dust on the coil caused some kind of condensation.

JR, my best sale was the pre-sale to my regular CL guy who I wrote about the other day. He bought all my DVDs, Blu-rays, the kids' Wii and about 40 games for various platforms for several hundred dollars. The best sale today was one of the kids' old beds, which went for $50.
