Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from Lima and we've had Richard's birthday lunch-of-choice - carry-in fried chicken.  Yes, today's his big 65th!

A Very Happy 65th Birthday to Richard!!

Gullman was hilarious, though he was curiously lowkey for a lot of his rather long (probably an hour or so) set.

That's great, JMK.  I always liked him on "Last Comic Standing."

I'll be very surprised if Gary doesn't end up with a sitcom as he is (as the opening act said to us before the show) "movie star handsome," plus he's like 6'6".

He is very nice to look at. ;)

Good Evening!

Today's concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic was wonderful, beautiful! The concert opened with the Labèque sisters playing Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole in the arrangement for two pianos. Their playing as always had no technical faults, but I was particularly impressed with the various colors and tones they were able to draw out of the pianos.

Next up was the world premiere of "Battlefield" by the Swiss composer, Richard Dubugnon. It was a concerto for two pianos - it was written for the Labèques - and double orchestra, along with a trumpet soloist and a bass(!) trumpet soloist. Oh, and an electric bass. The composer basically took the concept of a battle somewhat literally, and had one side of the orchestra and one of the pianists and trumpet soloists "battling" against the other set of musicians. There was some incredibly virtuosic writing for the pianists, and the writing for double orchestra provided some cool stereophonic aural effects.

The concert finished up with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. -And the players of the LA Phil more than met the demands of the challenging score. And in Walt Disney Concert Hall, the sound was clean and clear with just the right amount of "bloom".

And... I actually really liked Bring It On. Is it a great piece of Theatre? No. Is it a very entertaining way to spend two and a half hours? YES! It is a truly FUN show.

It's most definitely not a show for everyone. If you don't like pop/rock scores, you're most definitely not going to like this one. However, the score is very pop-y - in the good sense - and some of the lyrics are quite clever and funny. Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel (of In the Heights fame) wrote the music, and I could definitely hear shades of In the Heights throughout the show. -Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I also got a kick out of how other shows and pop culture icons were referenced throughout, but that was done without a sense of "wink". There was one almost literal reference to A Chorus Line which made me laugh out loud. Alas, the people sitting around me didn't seem to get why I was laughing and why they weren't. ;)

Best of all, I liked how the writers used the original movie of "Bring It On" as a starting point for their very own unique creation. I also appreciated how the show was cast in regards to people of different shapes, sizes, colors and types.

In between the LA Phil and Bring It On, I had a somewhat disappointing meal. The restaurant was apparently "recovering" from a party they had last night. Five of the nine beer taps were tapped out. They were out of table bread - all they had left were pita and hamburger buns. One of the signature appetizers was "86'd" along with three of the signature entrees - and it's relatively modest menu. My hamburger came out underdone. I had ordered it "medium", and it came out nicely charred, but still very red and cool inside. And then when the kitchen sent out a replacement one, half of it was cooked to medium, while the other half was practically well done. Thankfully, the bartender took a few things off my tab. But other tables were having issues with their food and service too. Each time I saw a waiter bring a check up to the register, he either had to comp some of the meal or give them a discount.

*I had walked in just a couple of minutes after they had opened for dinner service. Apparently, they were fully booked later in the evening. I wished the bartender well on my way out.

Don't tell BK, this is probably sacrilege, but I think I am going to dice some dill pickles into my salad.

DR TCB - I LOVE pickles/pickle relish in my tuna salad.

DR Jane - My friend who accompanied me to the concert earlier today gave me a custom assortment of See's. Just thought you'd like to know that. ;)
