And... I actually really liked
Bring It On. Is it a great piece of Theatre? No. Is it a very entertaining way to spend two and a half hours? YES! It is a truly FUN show.
It's most definitely not a show for everyone. If you don't like pop/rock scores, you're most definitely not going to like this one. However, the score is very pop-y - in the good sense - and some of the lyrics are quite clever and funny. Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel (of
In the Heights fame) wrote the music, and I could definitely hear shades of
In the Heights throughout the show. -Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I also got a kick out of how other shows and pop culture icons were referenced throughout, but that was done without a sense of "wink". There was one almost literal reference to
A Chorus Line which made me laugh out loud. Alas, the people sitting around me didn't seem to get why I was laughing and why they weren't.

Best of all, I liked how the writers used the original movie of "Bring It On" as a starting point for their very own unique creation. I also appreciated how the show was cast in regards to people of different shapes, sizes, colors and types.
